Sex 'n' violence in Discovery

He also said because it's Star Trek, they aren't going to have tons of swearing or anything.

Maybe it might have some sex scenes, although I think he will probably use the opportunity to make a show which has some pretty horrific science fiction concepts, rather than turn it into Game of Thrones. Think Twilight Zone with Hannibal's disregard for viewing standards. People getting dissolved by giant gelatinous blobs.

Hmmm, it's going to be interesting to see in any case. Battlestar Galactica and Stargate: Universe were a bit more graphic than most sci-fi shows and I enjoyed both. I certainly hope that Discovery will be more optimistic than either of those shows!

Are we talking about Chain of Command graphic? Conspiracy graphic? Occasionally Star Trek has rolled out episodes that have tested boundaries in this respect. I presume that's the level we're talking about here.

Just please don't show a sex scene within the first five minutes of the pilot. That way of introducing a character has gotten so cliche to the point that I turn off a series if that's how it starts. I don't have a problem with it within a story if it makes sense but at least let us get to know the characters first!

Got no issue with sex or violence used appropriately in the story and not just for shock value. Star Trek could do with loosening up on that front, present a less sanitised version of the future.

There shall be lots of frontal nudity and f-bombs...

Yeah, right.
:shifty:

At most, it won't be anything rated more than TV-14, IMO.

I doubt we'll get soft core porn. So long as any such scenes are important to the plot or character development then I'd be fine with it.

I'm torn on this. Whilst I like consistency - I think, in general, that western society is a little too prudish in some respects, so the more risque the better. However, not in the standard "sex sells" marketing variety of risque.

Enterprise suffered with it's overuse of topless and underwear scenes. I hope the new show doesn't rely on these "graphic" types of content.

Despite being a subscription service, All Access is still CBS. You might get basic cable level of profanity, but I'm betting they'll want to keep the broadcast option open. That means no nudity.

I am fine with less PG to be honest. Long as it fits and its not like trek has never had a sex scene. It just tends to fade to black fast

What are people's thoughts on Bryan Fuller's comments about Discovery not being bound by network standards, and that it'll be slightly more graphic?

I've always watched Star Trek with my family, so I'm not exactly eager for sex scenes.

The original was pretty graphic within the bounds of 1960's TV. Disintegrations, people being burned to death, a couple of near rapes. I think people tend to forget this when thinking about Star Trek. The spinoffs were much more sanitized.

The first episode is being broadcast on CBS.

Will it be any more daring than this?

Personally I won't mind if they address sex and violence if they do it in a mature, non-exploitative way. Like, I don't want it to be gratuitous for the sake of shock value, or for it to be...just...there, because reasons. Not as gratuitous as GoT, let's say. Maybe somewhere on the level of Mad Men?
