News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Oh, the ratings will go down.

Gotham will be its lead-in.

Thing is, Fox knows the ratings will drop. That's factored in.

The ratings on anything will go down. You will have tons of people tuning in to the first episode out of curiosity. Some will like it and continue to watch and some won't and won't watch anymore

McFarlane also announced on the AMA that the show will be moving to Thursday nights after Sunday's episode. I hope the change in time slot does not hurt the show.

Will it be safe from getting stuffed around by the NFL games on a Thursday night time slot? (I know that was concern some voiced in here about the premier last week).

That is certainly possible.

I do think, on the whole, that it will be good for BOTH shows. GOTHAM can get very dark. THE ORVILLE is lighter fare. They balance out.

Plus, it will be right after the season premiere of GOTHAM, so there might be new viewers that THE ORVILLE might not have otherwise had.

I don't think it will be preempted by games on Fox but they show Thursday night games sometimes on NBC or NFL Network so it might have competition.

Good point.

Nice interview with Brannon Braga about the show here.

"There is an episode where The Orville crew finds itself in a situation where they need to destroy an enemy vessel, but they actually take into consideration the thing we never did on Star Trek which was there are families aboard that ship."

On Sunday nights, it is going up against NBC's Sunday Night Football. The number one show in America, IIRC.

And it's up against the Emmys this Sunday. However, I don't know this for a fact, but I imagine sci-fi audiences have to be among the tougher to dissuade from viewing.

That was a very good interview. Very insightful. That spoiler makes me happy.

Here is Seth McFarlane's answer to why The Orville does not appear to have transporter tech:

I like his answer. Hopefully, this means that we won't see technobabble being used as a cheat to get out of a jams, like we started seeing in latter trek.

Also probably for the best seeing as how Star Trek had to find ways to break the damned thing to get characters into jams they they couldn't easily get out of.

Plus the latest ratings have The Orville premier at 8.6, so they might be better positioned to survive a ratings drop.

Not always. Survivor, football, Friends, Seinfeld, HIMYM, Lost. Lots of shows had ratings that went UP over time.

Networks sell ad time based on ratings projections.

If a show out-performs their projections, the sponsor gets a bargain.

If a show under-performs, the network has to compensate the sponsor and thereby loses money.

The quick way for a show to get cancelled is if, week by week, the show's ratings fall short of what the sponsors paid for. A network will cancel a show weeks before it starts costing them money if the trend is clear.

What those deals are is information that we're generally not privy to in any detail, BTW - hence the many, many conversations among fans along the lines of "But this other show over here had a smaller audience and was renewed, but my favorite show got cancelled! Not fair!"

Yeah, either break the transporter or come up with some technobabble reason why the transporter would not work, which usually involved some atmospheric anomaly: "Captain, unusual high levels of tribaryonic radiation in the atmosphere is blocking our transporter signal."

I'm glad that Orville will be avoiding that nonsense.
