News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Why are people judging Discovery if you haven't seen it yet? FFS.
People are pre-judging something before they see it? Shocking! In my decade plus posting on the Trek BBS this has never happened before. The injustice of it!

Nah, who am I shitting, this goes on all the time, and will continue to do so in the future. I for example have already decided I will enjoy Discovery's first season but loathe it's second.

I have opinions of what the producers are showing us. It's peculiar that some folks think that's unreasonable.

Finally found time to watch the pilot. Certainly not as bad as I feared it might be. Some of the humor isn't for me, but I did snicker a few times. The production design is neat and I love the design of the Orville, but the show's biggest shortcoming might actually be Seth's acting, which isn't very strong. This might not be a problem if the comedy angle of the show was played up more (like for example Jerry Seinfeld's poor acting on Seinfeld), but he looks downright embarrassing in serious scenes. Loved to see Brian George again (a Trek and Seinfeld alumna), I wish he was in more stuff.

Will definitely try to catch episode two. :techman:

So there is an audience for sci-fi that is fun and doesn't have a sense of self-importance!

While I hope the ratings stay up, it is too soon to celebrate yet. The real test will be how well it can hold up after the move to Thursday.

I agree. But the fact that many people tuned in, means there is a market for it. Whether or not The Orville can thrive in that market remains to be seen.

You know the people running "Discovery" have got to be worried. Not worried in the sense that they don't feel their show can compete on a creative level. I'm sure they are confident enough to trust that they have done a good job. They got to be worried that this show might still all their thunder and hurt their ability to build a fanbase. I think Trump as president even adds extra pressure because it makes sense on some level that people might choose comedy over grim drama because of how bad the real world is. That with the fact that you have more edgy stuff to pick from then they might actually want more variety than another show with the same feel. I do wonder though if both shows might be hurt when the CW comic book shows get started.

MY GIRLFRIEND SPUN OUT TODAY.

She bounced against all the walls and then stamped her feet on the ceiling until some one took her seriously.

My sweetie is extremely unhappy that she has to wait till Monday to see another episode of The Orville.

For her health, and my safety, I'll be glad when Discovery can minimize her rabid fangirling behaviour to survivable levels as a midweek tonic relief to curb her unreasonable animus.

You realize there is more than one hour in any given week? Discovery will be fine.

Yes and we sci-fi fans will clearly make the time for both, even and maybe especially because they have a spaceship setting. I wonder about everyone else though who only kind of likes these kind of shows. Heck I wouldn't even be shocked if their were people out their who think they are the exact same show that have been hearing about, being set on a spaceship. That sounds kind of like something my mom would think. It also reminds me of something my grandmother thought many years ago when she was still alive.

She had watched TOS when she was younger and saw some of TNG because I was getting into at the time. I also had started to get into DS9 as well and one day I was watching a DS9 episode and she asked me about it. I guess she had though from seeing I guess just parts of the show the DS9 was actually set on the different part of the Enterprise from "TNG." and I guess all the new characters just lived in that area. Not sure how they got that idea and who among us hasn't had to explain to someone that Stargate and Sliders weren't a time travel show or even what a alternate earth is?
