News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I watching the episode last night after reading this thread. There was one penis joke and I didn't really notice any fart jokes. what exactly are people complaining about?

Star Trek's Discovery and the Seth's Trek inspired Orville reminds me of the mid-'80s television series Blue Thunder based on the film and the advanced helicopter inspired Airwolf television series debuting the same year. Airwolf lasted four seasons and Blue Thunder lasted only one season.

latest

The blue thunder series stank like last week's fish though and anybody who tuned in expecting a series in line with the movie was very disappointed (not to having to pretend the last minute of the movie never happened :) Don't think I even made it through one ep.

As to The Orville, vs Discovery - I plan on watching both at this point

Do you remember zit, boob and floatation device jokes in Insurrection? Yes, high-minded faire indeed.
We're defending these now?

My problem wasn't with how crude the humor was but that I felt it didn't feel very organic and was just kind of given a half-assed delivery. Like when you watch those cooking competitions and the judge complains that some component just had no business being on the plate. Humor can be subjective though, some find drunk driving funny, some don't.

Really, what's surprised me the most is the amount of apparent nostalgia for all the trappings of TNG. The stuff that usually seems to be given short shrift when talking about the new films.

I also remember them not being well received by fans at the time though mainly because the drunk jokes were seen as demeaning to both the character and the actress.

I thought they were funny and perfectly in line with "Star Trek". Someone who drinks mostly synthehol their whole life would likely have issues drinking Tequila.

oh noes!! someone is defending Star Trek on a Star Trek board

agreed.

Also the character of Chochrane was drinking so that was perfectly fitting.

Defending boob jokes from Insurrection, though? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills but it's been shown my thought processes are quite broken lately, lol.
I think you missed the point of my post. Certain people are complaining about Orville's base humor, citing dick and (nonexistent) fart jokes, making it sound like Trek is somehow superior for not doing such things to get cheap laughs, despite numerous citations of evidence to the contrary. Certainly not defending their use, simply pointing out mind-numbing hypocrisy and hoping to move on. :)

I have to confess most of the show I was looking at the uniforms mentally breaking them down into sewing patterns for conventions

Absolutely. I'd love to make one. Sadly, got rid of my sewing machine in my last move - it needed replacement and I just haven't gotten around to a new one.

The color piping in the black areas of the uniform is interesting. These things are designed to be less unflattering on a greater variety of physiques than Trek outfits.

I liked the colorful costumes, but I confess I kept thinking the ship's doctor was a Green Lantern. :)

Yep,

It seems to me the critics had a serious agenda on this one. I keep hearing "this show doesn't know what it wants to be" which couldn't be further from the case.
Speaking for myself (and I think a few people would agree with me), when I said the show doesn't know what it wants to be, I meant less about the themes and the structure of the show, more so the tone of the show. I don't have a problem with a mixture of comedy and drama because when it's done right (such as Futurama), it can be wonderful. However, the quality of the jokes (and not just the juvenile stuff) doesn't jive with the dramatic elements the show may or may not be striving for. My concern is whether McFarlane will find (or even try to find) the right balance between these two elements.

People wanted and expected a Trek take-down and got a loving homage and can't seem to handle it.
I don't think that's a fair assessment at all. I think very few people, including the professional critics, wanted a Trek take down or can't handle a loving homage. Some don't see it as a loving homage and I can see why they may not see it that way, and that's fine. But that doesn't mean they "can't handle it."

This is where I agree that The Orville has more realistic people as characters. There's always one misfit like Malloy.
More than one if you look at the U.S. Navy. :D

It would be so great if The Orville did a parallel universe episode where they cross over to the real TNG universe. Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner or Jonathan Frakes could guess star. Imagine the possibilities!

I'd love it if they guest stared as the command crew of the Planetary Union's Flagship :D
Considering Patrick Stewart is a regular in McFarlane productions and the rest of the cast did an episode of Family Guy, as well as Jonathan Frakes as one of the directors, I have a feeling this may very well happen. I certainly hope so. :D

Yep,
Yes it looks like they were cut differently for different people. They all looked good on their actors. I just have to convince my boyfriend that we need these uniforms and that he wants to go to comic con with me.

Exactly this. First, even in a comedy, you don't talk like that. How can these people run an organization if all they do it make dick and fart jokes? And the constant blathering about the cheating. It did absolutely nothing for me.

You clearly haven't worked as a contractor for the Federal Government.
Or served with the U.S. Navy (or at least worked alongside as a contractor).
