If he was like B4 when he was young, I could see a few Starfleet cadets talking him into some shenanigans.

Actually, I am now picturing Picard reclining in his ready room chair holding a cup of tea and saying quite casually "Admiral, he's drawn a lot of penises on a lot of things" and it strangely enough works.
coffee....spit...everywhereHANSON: Please. Shelby would make you a hell of a first officer.
PICARD: I already have a hell of a first officer.
HANSON: Really? Word at Starfleet Command is that he drew a penis on the viewscreen in spacedock.
PICARD: Admiral...Commander Riker has drawn a great many penises on a great many things...
Isn't being a special one a cliche at this point. I mean you had Starbucks who was special, Kira from Orphan Black who was special, Peter from Gaurdians who is special, Clara and now The recent companion from doctor who are special. What happened to the regular humans or people.
I appreciate this show having someone drinking soda on the bridge. Most space travel I would think is really boring.
I couldn't help but feel that the jokes are only there to justify a "We're only parodying Star Trek, not ripping it off!" approach. SOme of the lighter humor worked okay for me, (the same kind of character based stuff regular Trek does) but the "gags" were so-so at best.
It's telling that my two favorite bits of humor were two things excluded from the trailers and TV spots, namely Justin the holographic "buddy ogre" being all soft-voiced and supportive and saying how "blessed" they must feel, and Mercer and his ex-wife including the Krill bad guy in their discussion about making a marriage work. It could be that since I hadn't seen those before the surprise made them funnier, but they also felt more organic and less like an obvious forced joke. They were just fun little bits of unexpected dialogue that won you over based on playing against expectations. That's exactly it. Some worked and others felt horribly forced. Overall, I did enjoy it. But, I hope they figure out this humor thing. It is difficult!

The rank system follows the U.S. Navy pretty much (and I picked up on that last night as I was watching, hearing their rank mentioned and then looking at the epaulettes).
For the division emblems on the chest, I'm gathering Blue uniform/Union Ship emblem = Command/Operations, Orange uniform/Orange Gears emblem = Support Services/Engineering, Red uniform/Red Shield and Wings emblem = Security?
I know the Green uniform = Medical, but didn't catch the insignia.
They set it up earlier by talking about how it was engineered to thrive in literally any environment.
and the other guy asking to wear shortsEveryone from People of Earth, too.
That really cracked me up. That was his main concern.

Yes. A long road, gettin' from there to here. It's like a long road trip. A really, really long road trip!
I read somewhere that the engines on the back have some basis in an acceleration curve. Something where if you look at the waveform for it in 3D, you'll see the curves similar to Orville's engines.I don't like the look of the "loops" at the back of the ship. I know it's hard to come up with an original spaceship, but this one doesn't do anything for me.
I thought the colors looked great. The gears badge looks a little "engineery" for helm/nav, but no big deal. IIRC orange was the color for Eagle pilots on Space 1999, not that that has anything to do with it. I really like the shoulder boards for the rank. Good visibility from different angles, good with short sleeves and different collar styles. The Love Boat understood this. The captain and admiral had a different, thicker border to their boards, with some kind of lettering on the forward side.
I liked the loops. It screams, "This is designed this way, because <insert technobabble here>."I don't like the look of the "loops" at the back of the ship. I know it's hard to come up with an original spaceship, but this one doesn't do anything for me.
Well, yeah...it's creative. But a tree that can grow in absolutely any material is a huge stretch, and needed to make the gag work.
Jonathan Franks is directing one of the episodes, as I recall. It would be so great if The Orville did a parallel universe episode where they cross over to the real TNG universe. Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner or Jonathan Frakes could guess star. Imagine the possibilities!
