Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

And here we thought we'd never see the Seventh Doctor's question mark sweeter/vest ever again.

Will we get the Sixth's coat next time Osgood returns?

So I'm wondering if the more casual look we've seen with the reports is some kind of change in Capaldi's Doctor, which started off with the sort of neo-Pertwee look (Although the jacket largely remains). We've sort of seen that before here and there-McCoy's jacket going from white to brown because of the character becoming 'darker', Smith's more formal outfits after Amy and Rory left etc.

Capaldi and Moffat have said that the Doctor will be played a bit differently this year, and we have seen the Doctor become somewhat more compassionate in the last few stories (especially his treatment of Clara). Perhaps it's Clara who is becoming sort of more ruthless while the Doctor is becoming less? We've also seen hints of that (The throwing the TARDIS keys in the volcano scene, for one).

We'll see how things develop. But Clara was emotionally compromised and desperate when she threw the keys in the volcano. And months of show-time passed since Danny's death and the Christmas episode. And by the end of that episode, Clara and Twelve's relationship was repaired and they were both happy.

So if she does become darker, it'll have to have something to do with Missy and the events of THIS series I should think, not because of the end of series 8.

Unless they pick up the thread from "Flatline" in which Clara played "Doctor" and was quite good at it, what with the lying, etc. But again...a ot of time has passed for the characters since then.

Oh, it would've been really, really lovely if they'd "introduced" the blue coat in the TV canon, wouldn't it?

Still, any coat worn by Collin Baker would likey be too large for Osgood. He was a large man then, long before his waist expanded. It was kind of huge on McCoy.

^ When I first noticed that in an outdoor shot I thought it was just the wind. But, he seems to consistently have that look so it's not the wind! Doc Brown would be proud!

Can't remember where I read it, but I recall an interview awhile back regarding Capaldi's outfit that said it will be "mixed up" a bit, possibly going back and forth between formal and casual depending on what he wears under his frock coat.

But I've also heard more than a one person describe the Twelfth Doctor's overall look as being increasingly "street magician"--he's definitely looking like one now, IMO.

Not EXACTLY spoilers, but... LOOK AT THAT COAT!

Also good to see that this Doctor hasn't gone completely retro punk grunge. The set photos so far this year have seen him pretty consistently in the holey sweater and/or hoodie from last year, with some Troughton-esque check trousers thrown in for good measure. I've been missing his more refined magician look (versus the apparent street magician look), and I'm glad to see it hasn't died. :)

Is that the guy from Flatlline in that picture?

EDIT: Never mind, just found confirmation of this in the other thread.

There's obviously no reason the Doctor has to dress the same all the time, but the radical variation is a little disconcerting, and actually I prefer the street magician look if I'm honest, the stage magician look just makes it seem like he's trying too hard to be Pertwee, that said I liked his look in The Mummy on the Orient Express

^ I totally agree in principle. However, I like Pertwee's look as the Doctor so if he's going to try too hard, it's a good choice! That, and Capaldi looks pretty sharp like that!

I disagree about Capaldi trying to echo Pertwee's style; the Twelfth Doctor wouldn't be caught dead in frills. That said, Pertwee is arguably "Peter's Doctor" as that was when he was apparently at the height of his Whovianism, so there would certainly be some influence.

Twelve said at one point that he was "hoping for minimalism, but came up with magician" (sic), so his later street look was mostly him settling into his role. Minimalist for this Doctor seemed to be less about having a plain style, instead just not thinking too much about it - or caring what others think. He's cold, he grabs a coat, regardless of its current ownership or scent. After all, who NORMALLY goes about wearing something like this? Hipsters? Space hipsters? Space hipster street magicians?

Anyway, I'm glad that with this new red velvet look, he's regained a little more of the former minimalist dress sense. And possibly cookies.

What's interesting is that the 12th doctor wore his default costume for what feels like 3 episodes before he kept modifying it.

It's like they ditched the magician costume as quick as they could.

Early season 9 set photos had the 12th with a hoodie and moth eaten shirt

Now he decides to cut his hair and wear a more tradition doctor costume

That "ad" was painful to watch. I hate these movie tie-in things. They're always awkward. But, I guess kids would get a kick out of it. At least we got to see 3 TARDIS sets.
