Series 9 Set Reports Thread (SPOILERS)

No reason why there should be: Nick Briggs was writing/directing/acting for Big Finish back at the start, but didn't become the main producer there till years after the TV series had come back.

Likely because the timing was inconvinient, he probably had more things on his plate, or maybe Big Finish decided not to approach him again.

Re the story about Moffat walking out, do we have any idea whether he was given the impression that they did have McGann? You would have thought something like that would have been discussed as part of the initial invitation after all?

What I don't get is, when Big Finish did get McGann... why didn't Moffat join in then?

Nobody's writing for BF for the paycheque, so I'm guessing he was prioritising the work that actually made him money. Add to that his slowness at producing scripts* (which isn't something that's just happened since he took over DW) and I imagine he wouldn't have got one finished even if he'd wanted to.

*If you watch 'Coupling' you'll notice that early episodes in each series feature location shooting but later ones don't. That's because the scripts would arrive so late there wasn't time to schedule any for them.

It's simplest to go back to what Moffat actually wrote in the new DWM, which is that he turned Big Finish down when they started, regretted it a few years later (which would probably be around the time McGann came aboard) and started to work out an idea, but had to shelve it due to lack of time when he was commissioned to write Coupling.
Now he's dug out the old idea and decided it's got something workable in it.
So no mysteries anywhere - except for the universal tendency of deadlines to come in clumps!

On the show, they have NOT made it clear. Moffat has said it, but it has not been established on the show it can be done (without Karn-Aid™ or any other outside influence). When Moffat leaves, the next show-runner may or may not confirm ON-AIR.

As far as the show goes, the Corsair changed gender and the Master has changed gender - period. The fact that the Doctor was not shocked when Missy revealed herself as the Master could mean it's always a possibility or it could mean he knows that the Corsair switched with Karn-Aid™ and the Master may have done so too.

Why is it important how The Master or The Corsair changed genders?

Is there something to be gained by calling those two individuals out as having 'non-normal' regenerations?

Shona had "Thrones" on her Christmas itinerary at the end of "Last Christmas" too

She would freak out

BUT in the Doctor Who universe Maisie never starred in GOT

Some new photos are showing up, one which has the Doctor wearing those kind of checkered pants that Troughton wore (and also to a degree McCoy) He's also wearing the hoodie again from the Christmas special. Makes me wonder if they're gradually changing the "Magician"/Pertweeesque look, or just having an alternate costume like most of the non-80s Doctors.

And from the episode titles it looks like six out of the first seven episodes of the next series are two-parters. How things change!
Really? Hmm...not sure how I feel about that. I'd welcome SOME two parters, sure...but it cuts the amount of stories in half. So...7 episodes, 4 stories?

That's sort of how the classic series did it, although (mostly) with four and six parters, with the ocassional two parter and I think one standalone (Although that was still part of the Dalek Masterplan arc). Of course there were longer stories ocassionally as well, especially with Hartnell and Pertwee.

There's also Colin Baker's season 22 which had two parters that were 45 minutes each (and one three parter, the Two Doctors), and Trial of a Time Lord which was 14 parts (Although arguably four different adventures).

If they're good stories, so what? This is a situation where the term "quality over quantity" does apply.

That depends totally on whether the story warrants one or two parts. Neither one nor two-parters are inherently better. The story has to have sufficient content to cover the allotted time, yet not feel rushed. In the past, I've more often felt that the story has been rushed. In those cases, a two-parter might've helped.

On the other hand, there've been cases where the story was awful as a one-parter and stretching it to two would've been cruel and unusual punishment! :p For example, the one with the moon egg, or the sudden trees.

We'll have to see how well the story serves the two-parters if that is what actually happens.
