Series 6 kept back to Autumn 2011?

Unlike the usual stories from the likes of The Sun saying either "Matt Smith to leave after Christmas" or "Matt Smith wants to be the Doctor for 30 years", this is based on comments by controller of BBC1 Jay Hunt. Of course, it turns out Jay Hunt is an idiot/rhyming slang: "The telling point for me was that first episode when Matt put the fishfinger into the custard and from that moment on I completely believed in him."

Still, I like the idea of Doctor Who being on in the Autumn months. It's darker and makes scary things scarier. On the downside, being scheduled against the awful-yet-popular-among-idiots Simon Cowell schlock might do for the show what being scheduled against Coronation Street did for the McCoy era.

Awesome! I hate waiting for spring.

No, hang on, autumn's not sooner, is it? Sorry, I'm not used to doing them in the right order.

One interesting knock-on effect from this -- less need for a Doctor-lite episode since there won't be a need to double-bank due to time constraints. The financial need, however, may remain. But they won't be forced to do so because of time constraints.

I don't believe a word of it being Moff's idea for story reasons though - it's got "BBC budget cuts" written all over it.

I wonder how the DVD releases will be - a season 6 box set, or will they call it six and seven? (especially given that Moff has said at ETV that 13 episodes is like two normal BBC series, so they're making it as two series) and rip us off along the lines of Nu BSG's 4th season...

Apparently the first half will end on a cliffhanger in episode 7, and will then have 6 episodes in the second half, so I also wonder if this means they'll just have the last episode be the Xmas one and not bother making a separate special...

If it starts at around the same time in Spring, there will no longer be the problem of the Summer sun driving down viewership in the latter half. I wonder if that's also a contributing factor?

well it will be nice to have doctor who twice a year even if its less episodes

I bet this is a move to have the full series to take place in the Autumn though,

it does seem to be the fashion for the bbc to do this splitting thing with there best shows with top gear being split into two mini series instead of the regular long run of 13.

Not keen on the idea at all, seems very half baked and indecisive on the behalf of the BBC. With the X Factor and the brainless hordes of the british public who watch that shit for more than 2 seasons without becoming bored, BBC would be better off starting the show at the start of March so it would end in the final week of May to avoid the major drop off in numbers come June/July.

The problem, Jax, with that approach is that they'd still be filming the sixth season when the season debut airs. Filming begins on the season proper next week or the week after (the first table read is next week), and they film for thirty-five, thirty-six weeks. That would put the final filming block in May. With a split season, they'll still be filming when Easter rolls around, but they won't have the epic production crunch that RTD ran into with "The Satan Pit"/"The Impossible Planet" of finishing the episodes literally days before broadcast.

I think splitting the season is, contrary to Moffat's rosy spin about storytelling, a practical decision entirely due to the filming schedule. The BBC likes Doctor Who in the spring, but they won't have enough in the can when spring rolls around to broadcast the entire season then. A split season is a good compromise between the BBC's scheduling needs and Moffat's production needs.

it's like the crap ITV kept pulling with Heartbeat, The Royal and a couple of other shows my mum likes. show it for 3 weeks, yank it for something else and then show it for four weeks before repeating.
