Series 11 News & Spoilers

This is the challenge of free "news" websites. They want eyeballs, they NEED eyeballs to have ad revenue. So, they will post anything and everything to get a click.
Right and I have no problem with that as long as they're clear about what kind site they are (and aside from their more clickbait-y headlines, io9 is clear on that count). My issue here is anyone claiming that io9 represents journalism.

Why? Because you don’t like the show anymore, so it’s a desirable outcome? Beyond that, why would they leave?

It’s not a desirable outcome, and I had the feeling this would happen some time ago....history tends to repeat itself after all. Why would they leave? Maybe they don’t like the bitching, maybe the higher ups don’t like the new direction, maybe it’s harder to sell a smaller package and that’s what they have now. Maybe chibnall never wanted the big chair, or finds it a cursed throne now he’s on it. Maybe he doesn’t have the love or skill that pushed RTD and Moffat. Maybe Jodie doesn’t have the love that a couple of previous actors had, and like Ecclestone was motivated by opportunity to be recognised as a historic media moment and loyalty to a friend as much as an acting job, and like ecclestone, just has a bad time in the production. Who knows.
But it’s not been the jewel in the crown since we had an anniversary with a young Doctor, and we knew the next incumbent would be a different tack, we’ve even had something of an hiatus and a case of regeneration without that Doctors actor present....synchronicity is a funny thing, and we are at a half decade anniversary, with cartoon robots and quasi historicals, and big theme social commentary. Schedule changes"...disliked costumes...companions from broken homes with disability low in the mix. It’s all such an echo, and has been feeling familiar for a while now.
First time is tragedy, second a farce.

Could be wrong.

And yeah, I’m not watching really. Not even actively not watching.
For the first time in....ever really. Season 24 technically I missed. Which is this ones echo, give or take a Rani.

I don’t want it to fail, possibly I don’t care...but I think it’s very possible right now, more so than any recent year. Culottes and cheap import earrings from amazon don’t even come into it.

I was under the impression they report genre news. Though I grant you...the quality ain’t what it was.

I stopped reading when you wrote “I had a feeling this would happen”

Literally nothing has happened. Except for rumors.

And, it’s been 13 years, can we learn to spell Eccelston’s name correctly? (Ok, I skimmed more)

If there was any truth to this rumour at all, by now we would have a statement from the BBC on the matter, either confirming it is indeed true (like they did with Eccleston) or a carefully worded non-denial to buy them some more time (like they did with the missing episodes found rumour before announcing Enemy of the World and Web of Fear). The fact the rumour has circulated this long with the BBC being silent is enough to confirm for me this story is horseshit, and should be enough to confirm it for everybody.

I don't know. Marvel was pretty silent for awhile after the James Gunn situation and AMC was able to hide the fact that not only is Rick Grimes not going to die but they have 3 movies planned with him. We still don't know anything bout whether or not their is going to be a new Star Wars trilogy with Rian Johnson. Studio's and networks don't have to say anything until they want and for all we know nobody has even asked them to comment on it. PLus this is still pretty new rumor. I don't even think it's a week old at this point. I mean anything really possible.

I am 50/50 on it being true and also those odds will go up or down depending on the ratings for the next few ep's and also how well not having a Christmas Special will go over. Only thing I am certain is the Salem Witch Trial episode is not going to go over well. I don't think anyone expects it to be subtle or very good. If "Legends" which is now the fun time travel show could only make it sort of decent I am not sure this group will do much better.

Jason

BBC operates completely different from Marvel. There's absolutely no point in comparing an American film that company oversees a massive franchise that's owned by an even more massive corporate enterprise to a British public service broadcaster whose charges are far beyond just one successful science-fiction show.

That's not comparing apples and oranges. It's comparing apples and salmon.

That leaving rumour is gathering steam.
Sigh.
I called this in Capaldis first or second season. Wilderness years 2 here we come. With much bigger outcry this time I expect. Jodie will be the new sylvester.

Could be wrong.
On the other hand, I haven’t exactly carried on watching this season...but I might catch up. I did on Capaldi in the end.
If you "called it" in Capaldi's first or second season, and it still hasn't happened after all these years, that's not really calling it, right?

The ratings have been good. If there is a hiatus, it won't be because of ratings. The risk here is if Chibnall is leaving and if it's difficult to find a qualified producer who is interested. That's what caused the extended break back in '89. The plan back then was that the show would return once they found someone who was interested in taking over for JNT, which didn't happen. That could be the scenario if Chibnall leaves, but I'm not buying into that rumor yet.

It does continue to surprise me that there's such a dearth of showrunner candidates, but I think part of the problem is the notion of showrunner, because you have to be producer, writer, visionary etc etc and that's a difficult combo to find a match for. I'd argue Moffat is a better writer than RTD, but clearly RTD was a better producer, but both were visionary.

My feeling is that Chibnall scores high on the producer scale and is an OK to good writer, but I just don't think he's visionary in the way his predessesors were.

Of course you could argue maybe he doesn't need to be, and maybe we do need a different way of doing things, and the ratings are very good so what do I know, but remember it's possible for something to be successful and the powers that be can still want a change. Die Another Day was a ridiculously successful Bond film, but Eon still took the decision to get rid of Pierce and go in a radical new direction.

Given the lengths the BBC went to to get Chibnall I can't imagine there's any appetite on their behalf to lose him, so if (huge if) there's any truth to the rumour then it can only be down to him not enjoying the role rather than any other reason.

I'll be amazed if there aren't some changes for his and Jodie's 2nd season though(spreading his episodes out more, the return of a season long arc like Bad Wolf, and Daleks and/or Cybermen--or more likely both)

I have no proof of this but my feeling is that the problem is the BBC. They want a known, successful name as showrunner but the known, successful writers/producers have their own things they want to be getting on with. Which is why the ones we've had so far were die hard fans who credit Doctor Who for making them want to be writers in the first place. Newer, lesser known writers may be interested but who knows.

Are they limited to only thinking of British showrunners? I think Joss Whedon for example would make for a great showrunner of "Doctor Who." Whoever did the show "People of Earth." would be a good one as well.

Jason

And why would Joss Whedon want to do it?

Money! Well that and I think he went to school in England and I assume he might be interested in doing his take on the show. I believe his HBO show is going to have a British setting. Another person I thought of was the creator of "The Good Place."

Capaldis season is where I saw it wandering, and felt that we only had maybe one doctor after him before another ‘break’.

He is richer than any British show could ever make him. He is currently an executive producer on Agents of Shield, even if it is just a title and pay cheque. Involved with a Buffy reboot. Working a film and an HBO show. He doesn't need the work or the money.

Then maybe he would want to do it for the creative angle. I wonder if he is a "Doctor Who" fan.
