Serenity vs. Star Trek

Dennis, ok; thanks. I might pick up the first-season box.

Uh -- first, just tell me: did you work on this show? Just kidding.

Just a warning: the first seaon is only half a season, and it's not very good IMO. It really finds its legs the second season.

Hahaha, what a surprise to see a Star Trek basher being a Firefly/Serenity fan.

I think Mal is a bigger asshole than Kirk, the guy literally threw that kid to the wolves in the film.

Mal is definitely a bigger asshole than Kirk. That's kind of the point of Firefly. People are assholes, mercenaries, cowards, whores, psychos, uptight prudes, etc, and you still root for them.

God, no. I could write Trek well enough (barely) to sell an episode; what writers like Whedon and his folks can do is well beyond my abilities.

This'll sound backward, but I'd recommend picking up the second or third seasons of the show - it's slow to get started, and the (short) first season is really uneven. There are also a couple of "theme" collections available that sample episodes from various seasons, like these:

Link2

Then there's the Buffy musical episode, "Once More With Feeling," which is something unto itself...

I'm just pointing out that a basher (a Firefly fan, surprise surprise)calling Kirk an asshole then making out Mal to be honourable or better in any way shape or form (lol!) is just flat out wrong. Serenity was an ok ending to a pretty ok series that might've gone somewhere. It doesn't hold a candle to Trek.

Buffy is good? I have never watched a single episode; what am I missing?

Where to begin?

Star Trek was my favorite show of all time until Buffy came along. It took a lot to get me to watch Buffy, because what I imagined it to be was nowhere close to what it really was. I was a diehard fan of Star Trek since 1966, and became an avid fan of Buffy in my mid-40's. It is NOT a kids' show. It is comprised of some of the best writing and acting I've ever seen anywhere.

I know I haven't given you specific examples, but by the end of Season 2, you realize that you've gone through an emotional rollercoaster as you find yourself laughing, crying, experiencing anger and frustration and resolution, often all within one scene.

Star Trek still has a major place in my heart, but Buffy is extraordinary.

No, just more like something resembling an actual and interesting human being, as opposed to an action/adventure heroic stereotype like the new Kirk.

miniglik, I like funny; and dry is good. Thanks for the run down. :)

Dennis, Mr. Ed vs. Star Trek. I just happen to have Mr. Ed DVD's.

I liked Buffy when I was about 14, but I stopped watching when there was some alien metal robot thing. I did watch that episode where her mum dies though, that was pretty sweet.

So if Kirk had murdered someone or robbed a bank it would make him an interesting character?

:guffaw:

I dunno, I prefer him being an angry young man who starts bar fights than a Han Solo rip off who robs banks and kills people for money while making sarcastic jokes.

So the short-sightedness of one fan makes you judge all of us?

If you had kids, you would know that you can't love one more than another. You appreciate each for what makes them unique and what they bring into the world with them. I feel something similar (but nowhere near as intensely as for my kids!) for both movies/franchises. I love them each for their strengths, and tend to forgive their weaknesses. You don't have to hate one to love the other. There's room in the world for both.

If that's the best you can do, don't try to keep up with me. :)

El Diablo Robotico!

Yes! :techman:

My husband loved Firefly and Serenity. He's watched the box set probably three times. But he says of Buffy that he's not into the whole goth thing -- but he'll watch if I want to.

I actually think New Kirk and Mal are fairly similar in some ways. Mal's had different life experiences, but I think he's no less a stereotype (jaded smartass smuggler who isn't quite as cold as he thinks he is/ would like to be, or like you say, Han Solo). But they both have a similiar fire to them.

I have to say, as much as I like New Kirk (and I really, really do), I think his one flaw is not quite fitting the mold of the franchise. The reason so many people complain about him being made cpt is because... he shouldn't be a cpt in a Star Trek-like setting. He's made more for a Jossverse, honestly, where you run a ship because you're mean and scrappy and charismatic, and you don't have to follow the rules.

Oh you're trolling, very funny.

No, I'd say that's closer to an accurate characterisation of your reply than of mine. I'm serious - if mocking and childish attempts to misdirect of the "oh, if Kirk robbed a bank/Han Solo rip-off" variety are your best contributions to this topic then I can't converse with you as an equal.

I find him likable on the superficial level that characters like Cruise's "Maverick" in "Top Gun" are likable - he's a familiar stereotype and Pine plays him very well, bringing a lot of informal charm to the role. Pine is great.

How the character will hold up - or have to change - when they're required to write a story featuring him as the man in charge of a deep-space vessel with a crew of hundreds will be interesting to see.

You said that Mal wasn't a stereotypical action hero compared to Kirk. What? Flying through a space battle, fighting a bunch of space indians, and a ninja isn't a stereotype? That in itself is hilarious, and deserves to be mocked.

This thread is just a pissing contest. Have you determined whose penis is longer yet? Once you find out, will you realize nobody else cares?
