semi-vanity thread: who's the biggest stoner here?

Why has flamingliberal not posted in this thread yet? I thought she had some sort of thread-fu radar for this sort of thing. ;)

As for me, I avoid the pharmaceuticals. Alcohol, on the other hand... ;)

I used to be quite the stoner when I was younger, but I gave it up several years ago when I started getting anxiety attacks from it. I've tried a lot of other harder things since then, but what strikes me the most in retrospect is that very few of them have had the potency that pot once did. Now, there's a certain risk to partaking in things like that obviously, but it's also entirely possible to do it and not become an addict or ruin your life.

I'm sure this is boring and obvious but here goes....is this really something to be proud about? I suppose since you are 35 this is something you won't grow out of. I'm not even talking about the actual dangers of smoking it, but the fact that in its purest form, the taking of anything even mildly hallucinagenic is puerile.

RAMA

the same can be said of weightlifting.

How so? Speaking as a certified trainer, I can tell you that almost anyone can benefit from weight-bearing exercises, the reverse cannot be said of taking brain altering chemicals. I don't need to escape life or need drugs as a crutch. You're not even remotely on the right tack here. I'll run rings around you on this one.

Spoken like one that has not tried it.

The same thing can be said about drinking alcohol or caffeine or eating chocolate or skydiving or having sex or, yeah, pumping iron; it changes brain chemistry temporarily and people wouldn't do it if there was no pleasure in it.

Sorry, stimulants can change brain chemistry but its not the same thing as altering your brain soley for its hallucinagenic effects. Sure, I haven't tried illegal drugs, but I have no reason to. I'm healthy, smart, quick and I'm not a depressed loser.

Well, I have built a 3 person water hookah out of a deep space nine model.
*steals idea*

Well RAMA your opinion has merit and is noted. A lot of young people experiment with various drugs, just for kicks. That in itself is "puerile" (yeah I had to look that one up). But your whole reasoning crumbles after that, like ganja that has been over-dried.
I think that the main reason so many younger people play with hallucinogens and such, is because of the policy (in the US) of mis-education and non-education about these things. Interesting to note that Holland has much less of a problem with its youth than the US in this regard.
There is nothing intrinsically immature about smoking marijuana, in fact young people shouldn't smoke it. The association you have is not based on reality, but on cultural conditioning. It should be an adult association, not "that's something kids do until they grow out of it".
This particular plant, as well as most of the other entheogens, have been companions of humanity forever. There are long, deep traditions that continue today having to do with their proper use. Marijuana does socialize enormously with repeated exposure. The more serious hallucinogens were never meant to be taken lightly. But, there is no proper education about this, they are just left as forbidden fruit, which does, on rare occasion, have tragic results.
It's all cultural. The US is all about encouraging, even structuring work days around the consumption of stimulants - coffee break - but an entheogen like marijuana is opposed for a reason. It really does help open the consciousness. Whoever "they" are, they don't want that. But it is far from immature. Required? Of course not. Nothing revealed is anything you hadn't already known. But there is great value in such revealation. It is a path less traveled, and we have the right to walk it.

Using something just for its mind altering effect is simply not mature and it will never be, regardless of the rationale, cultural acceptance, or history of its use...and actually since its against the law in the US people don't have the right to use it.

You know its funny, I've never started a "vanity thread" on being super healthy, or the fact that I've been 7% bodyfat, or I've lifted a lot of weight or my knowledge benefits people, but some guy who thinks he's succeeded in life because he smokes a silly plant, he gets support from like-minded fools. Its really sad.

I used to smoke between 5-10 bowls a day, almost every day, for 2 years or more. Not so much lately, though, between being broke and trying to get a government job.

RAMA - Your premise in assuming that all who choose to smoke pot do so to escape reality, because they are losers, depressed, or anything else along those lines is flawed, ignorant, and insulting. For most it is simply a recreational experience.

it just seems to me that weight lifting is a trowback to teenage awkwardness and not being comfortable in your own body yet and trying to do something but it if for nothing more than to impress the chicks or to look good in the locker room.

So, you've got muscles. Big deal. Doesn't make you invulnerable or any more or less human. Sure you might be that much more healthy than the regular joe but we have body fat for a reason. I congratulate you for your effort and your devotion and all that but I'm sorry to say I'm not impressed. It's like seeing someone peel out of a parking lot in an IROC. All for show.

holy shit bro. that government job federal prison, is it? Christ, I can barely smoke a bowl without needing a nap. Tolerance! I wish I had it!

Tolerance has its drawbacks. Like not getting as high. I haven't smoked in months now. Part of a joint would send me flying to the moon and back. Hate falling asleep - wastes the high.

RAMA, honestly I respect your opinion on drug use, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that it's also incredibly ignorant and insulting. There are a lot of things that alter your brain chemistry. The first four listed on google are talk therapy, monogamy, sunlight, and menstrual cycles.

The point is the issue is complex, to many degrees subjective, and not at all black and white.

...not to mention running down other posters who you don't even know for doing something you've never even tried is incredibly immature in and of itself.

To be fair, I think he was being attacked unfairly too. You all fell victim to the trap of taking something personally and turning your defensive response into an offensive attack. A little empathy does the body good. In fact, it probably alters your brain chemistry. :D

I'm quite happy with alcohol for recreation, I can't imagine it could beat that. Even coke doesn't beat alcohol. The one thing that did was the single time I tried half an E tablet... Whoa! Now THAT, was a helluva' night. I would never ever try it again however, because the feeling was so amazing. A slippery sloap to addiction if messed with I'm sure... next thing you know, you'll be onto horse tranquilisers!

Kids . . . I swear to God . . .

You gotta spend the first half of you life listening to people brag about how fucked up they can get and the second half of your life listening to the SAME people bitch about how hard it is to quit . . .

Jeeeziz!

If you read back this post using Dr. Smith's voice, it sounds remarkably in-character.

I've done them both at the same time!

Honestly though, I agree with you. I've enjoyed the experiences I've had, but I don't see the appeal in doing any of it regularly or in most cases more than once.
