Kodak is more a Rochester thing, and I don't think IBM ever had a big presence in Syracuse . . . Carrier is still holding on . . . Magna/New Process/New Venture Gear whatever it's called - still around, Lockheed Martin, other places I can't seem to think of :P
manufacturing has really dried up, but it's a great big little city
Forbes rated it #4 best place to raise a family (Buffalo #10, Albany #9 and Rochester #3 also made the Forbes list)
Housing is affordable, great private schools (city schools are ok in my opinion), lots of colleges/universities, excellent parks, easy access to other parts of the state with I90(E/W) and Rt81(N/S)
also Syracuse is consistently the snowiest metro area in the US

That was merely an expression. The quotes below were quite spiteful and occurred long before the OP's post about the purchase of a second larger home, which some have claimed was the main issue:
Monopoly money? The OP later clarifies that he is well able to afford and pay for these homes. I would say that particular remark was unwarranted. Perhaps there is someone else who could be accused of "bitching".

On this particular point, it was my impression (and pardon me if this is incorrect, Tom) that the post about the second larger home in Syracuse and the follow-up about Monopoly money seemed to be tongue-in-cheek. It was written with a certain air of exaggeration. I went back and looked, and he even says it in this post:
He later goes on to say that when they move to Syracuse, they'll be renting, so that confirms (in my mind, at least) that he was being tongue in cheek.

Yeah, I honestly don't see you as being envious and to say you were, especially after you explained yourself, is being rather silly at best. Whether or not someone agrees with your point it should be crystal clear that it came from a moral standpoint and not one of jealousy.

I thought it was well known that most sexy Italians were just itching to move to Long Island. You cant stand that he has everything you want and is willing to give it away!

I scanned my paystub and it gave me a "File Not Found" error.
All my payslips are sent as password-protected PDFs now so if that happened to me I'd be quite cross.
I've never lived in as rough circumstances as you J., but I did spend my primary school years on welfare, so I can relate to the attitude about dealing with what comes your way.
I'm a rather fortunate person. If I can sell my flat break-even just to dump the mortgage I'll be well-pleased, but it looks like we'll get a small profit off of it, though the estate agents said to expect it to take six months or so to sell. We'll probably put it on the market next spring; after that we can get the divorce - wooooooo!
