Selling your Home

If a colleague at the office had said similar things about a sale and a move, would you speak to them as some posts earlier spoke to the OP? Most would put it more tactfully if they said anything at all I'd wager, but here, it's ok to tear a man to ribbons because you are safely behind your monitor miles away.

Tear him to ribbons? LOL Have you even read through the thread and seen the way he's replied? Because it doesn't appear that way.

Yeah.. "Sorry, I don't feel sympathy for you at all" is hardly tearing a man to ribbons.

I remember all my relatives bailing on Syracuse ages ago. Without Kodak and IBM what's left?

lots of stuff
Kodak is more a Rochester thing, and I don't think IBM ever had a big presence in Syracuse . . . Carrier is still holding on . . . Magna/New Process/New Venture Gear whatever it's called - still around, Lockheed Martin, other places I can't seem to think of :P
manufacturing has really dried up, but it's a great big little city
Forbes rated it #4 best place to raise a family (Buffalo #10, Albany #9 and Rochester #3 also made the Forbes list)
Housing is affordable, great private schools (city schools are ok in my opinion), lots of colleges/universities, excellent parks, easy access to other parts of the state with I90(E/W) and Rt81(N/S)
also Syracuse is consistently the snowiest metro area in the US :D
I like snow :D

That was merely an expression. The quotes below were quite spiteful and occurred long before the OP's post about the purchase of a second larger home, which some have claimed was the main issue:

I know it's probably unfair (different markets, different standards, etc.), but I'm having a really hard time feeling some sympathy for someone who "bitch" and "commiserate himself" about owning a 315 square metres, two-storied villa with 4 bedrooms, 3 & 1/2 bathrooms, 4 rooms downstairs, with vaulted ceilings and shit, after paying it with Monopoly money.

Monopoly money? The OP later clarifies that he is well able to afford and pay for these homes. I would say that particular remark was unwarranted. Perhaps there is someone else who could be accused of "bitching". ;)

<snip> 5 pages of "woe is me, I own a big-ass house" put me a foul mood.

Yeah, not envious at all. Naturally, another poster's large home will most certainly put you in a "foul mood". Stands to reason.

Forget the house. I would invest in some grammar lessons. :p

On this particular point, it was my impression (and pardon me if this is incorrect, Tom) that the post about the second larger home in Syracuse and the follow-up about Monopoly money seemed to be tongue-in-cheek. It was written with a certain air of exaggeration. I went back and looked, and he even says it in this post:

However in my defense it was meant in fullest sense of hyperbole. I would probably say it to his face, but then he would destroy me with his wit and cynicism.

He later goes on to say that when they move to Syracuse, they'll be renting, so that confirms (in my mind, at least) that he was being tongue in cheek.

Meh. I already explained myself and my reasons for interjecting into this discussion, including why I think Tom H's situation is not comparable with others like PKTrekGirl who have been badly affected by the housing crash. At this point, it seems like you are either unable to get it, or uninterested to listening. Believe as you wish: either way, it's no skin off my nose.

Yeah, I honestly don't see you as being envious and to say you were, especially after you explained yourself, is being rather silly at best. Whether or not someone agrees with your point it should be crystal clear that it came from a moral standpoint and not one of jealousy.

I thought it was well known that most sexy Italians were just itching to move to Long Island. You cant stand that he has everything you want and is willing to give it away!

I really don't think it's about jealousy. I think it's about venting about a negative situation when there are many, many people who are worse off. I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to complain. But you can't be surprised when it rubs someone the wrong way. My husband complains about how much we've lost on our house and I tell him to shut up and thank his lucky stars for all we still have, because so many people have come out much worse. This isn't a "people are starving in Africa" thing, this is about so many people here losing their jobs and homes all around us.

Kestra, that's a very commendable attitude. I'm glad that you can see the best in what is still a difficult situation. Keep working hard and you guys will pull through!

Mr Awe

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that we aren't doing well. Things haven't gone as planned and we've taken some losses but everything considered, I think we're doing more than okay. Thanks for the kind words though. :)

Actually, you not coming off looking particularly good yourself. Just a bit to bitter to not indicate something deeper. Best to let it go.

Oh, I got that sense alright! :) But, just shows my point, a lot of people would be griping about not being able to sell the house even if they could afford it alright. You seem pretty cheerful about it. Taking it in stride.

Mr Awe

If you find Iguana irresistible and want to clean his rifle, no need to draw me into it. Simply ask the guy out. Why the big song and dance... :techman:

:p

Best to let it go.
I did.

Other people, however, seems unable to. If I were in a sarcastic mood, it would be easy to add that I am probably just too well-liked, and I must be punished for it by those who does not enjoy the same respect I do: envy is such an ugly thing... :(

I scanned my paystub and it gave me a "File Not Found" error. :(

All my payslips are sent as password-protected PDFs now so if that happened to me I'd be quite cross.

I've never lived in as rough circumstances as you J., but I did spend my primary school years on welfare, so I can relate to the attitude about dealing with what comes your way.

I'm a rather fortunate person. If I can sell my flat break-even just to dump the mortgage I'll be well-pleased, but it looks like we'll get a small profit off of it, though the estate agents said to expect it to take six months or so to sell. We'll probably put it on the market next spring; after that we can get the divorce - wooooooo!
