Self-worth, achievement, and having kids

I've never heard anyone say "only" and if I did hear that I would assume they are minimizing the other stuff as a way of highlighting the importance of their relationship to their children. I think it's just a turn of phrase. It's easy to look at all the dribble life gets filled up with and say, "the only thing real is the kids".

If you interpret things that way then there's really nothing wrong with the phrase. I tend to interpret things fairly literally and if someone said "only"to me as per the OP I'd possibly see that as an indicator the person didn't give themselves enough credit for their other accomplishments.

I wouldn't say "only" but I might say "only important". It's a matter of perspective. I've heard some people say some pretty huge things when they have just had a baby because it blows all the other crap you've been striving at for years out of the water.

Most people don't speak in a way that you can take everything they say literally. We are full of idioms and half meanings and random enthusiasms we wouldn't sign our name in blood to.

I sign my name in blood to everything. You can't tell on the forum but I print out each of my posts and sign it in blood.
