Section 31 was Michelle Yeoh's idea

Alex Kurtzman spoke recently to Variety as reported by TrekMovie, and part of the discussion turned to Section 31.

It turns out that the idea for Section 31 came from one of the Discovery actors. “The truth is that for Section 31 the idea of doing that show, it was Michelle Yeoh‘s,” said Kurtzman. “She deserves all the credit for that. She actually came to me about it before we even aired the first season of Discovery. She loved playing the character and she said, ‘I know that there are a lot of young women who grew up like I did and did not see somebody like me on screen and I want to be that person.’ And I said, ‘That sounds amazing! Let’s do it.’

“But we didn’t know if people were going to like Discovery. We didn’t know if Discovery was going to work, at the time. And so I said ‘Let’s see how it works, and if we can get there let’s get there.’ She killed it. She did amazing work on the show. And then in Season Two, we really started digging into the mythology of Section 31, which had been dealt with on other shows. And we started seeing a way to do it. And so we got there.”

Kurtzman also spoke about the progress of the show, saying “Erika [Lippoldt] and Boey [Yeon Kim], who are two of our writers on Discovery, have been working with Craig Sweeny, who was a writer we worked for a long time and he ran Limitless for us. And they’ve been doing an amazing job building the show. So I’m really excited about where it’s going. And I can’t wait to see Michelle in that part. And I think people are going to be very surprised about the world that it occupies. We’ve seen stuff online where people have guessed certain things, but some they are nowhere even near guessing. So that’s pretty fun.”

I privately suspected this from the beginning because you can see what a blast she's having playing the Empress.

I'm looking forward to it. I think it's going to be a 32nd Century Section 31 in the Beta Quadrant, if the third season of DSC mostly takes place there. And I also like secret-mission, spy stuff.

People have told me she's a good actress, but you'd never know it by watching Discovery.

I admit, I do find it ****ing hilarious the way she and the fans reacted.

Fans: We love Captain Georgiou! Give us a series about her as a Lawful Good exemplar captain!

Michelle Yeoh: I LOVE playing an evil genocidal vamp in leather!

Fans: *twitch*

I wish we would get some more info on the show. I need something new to complain about.

It will be Georgiou, Tyler, and a talking pie.

Here's Kurtzman making his pitch.

Honestly we don't know what era it's going to take place in. Originally it was supposed to be the 23rd century with Tyler and the former empress being employed by Section 31.

It could still end up being that, Or yes it could take place in the 32nd century; Or hell they could become time travelers like Doctor Who fixing the federation's problems across time and space.

Until Alex Kurtsman or someone on the writing and production staff gives us more information, we just don't know what era or situations will be a part of Section 31 the series.

As for those saying: well she's stuck in the 32nd century...

Please. Time traveling a thousand years is nothing in Star Trek. If the setup calls for her to return to the 23rd century or some other era; that's what will happen as the series starts. Right now all we know is that there's a writer's room, and they're still breaking stories for season one of the series itself.

Before Discovery, I knew her from Tomorrow Never Dies. She was pretty good in that. She was also in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which I want to see, and she won an award for last year's Crazy Rich Asians.

Her acting was stiff and unnatural in Discovery. To be fair, the writing and dialog was really poor which probably accounts for a lot of it.

I never for one second thought this would have Tyler as a main character. That doesn't bode well, he's awful.

The writing and dialog as a whole in Disovery is still and unnatural. Everyone speaks in statements, Burnham especially.
