Star Trek: Section 31 Confirms Start of Production with First Look
Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh released a photo from set; plus, additional cast announced!

Red alert!

Production is officially underway now on the original movie event, Star Trek: Section 31, in Toronto, with the first image shared of Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh on the set of production.

In Star Trek: Section 31, Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the fan-favorite character Yeoh first introduced in Star Trek: Discovery, joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

In addition to Yeoh, the cast of the CBS Studios production includes Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Emmy Award winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).

Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman enthusiastically states, "And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31. We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the Trek universe."...

If it is set in the 23rd century era, I'm a little bummed that Shazad Latif isn't mentioned - could be a smaller role, though.

But hey, whatever it is, I'm excited!

Well, the UFP being involved at least disqualifies the original plan that she would go back to the 21st century (would seem like too much of a retread of Picard Season 2 at this point).

The question is, when? Theoretically it could be any point for like 1,000 years, but knowing how Trek loves to be self-referential, it's almost certainly somewhere between the end of Enterprise and the end of Picard. Going from beginning to end:
  • The idea of a sequel of sorts to Enterprise taking place during the Earth-Romulan war would be fun. I know Section 31 was kind of already in existence in Enterprise, but they didn't call it by that name, so we could see Georgiou sort of found the organization. Upside is some cameos from Enterprise cast (would live to see Shran again!). Downside is it feels a bit deflating if Georgiou has to build an organization from the ground up that later falls apart on her watch.
  • Then there's the "back to the 23rd" option. This would allow for the SNW/Disco Season 1/2 extended cast to be involved. Possibly the easiest area for crossover, given it's also filming in Toronto. But it seems...underwhelming...if Georgiou just ends up back where she started.
  • Finally, there's the option to have it in/around the Picard era, which gives a huge raft of characters who could appear in at least cameos. Narratively, this would probably work the strongest, because even with DIS Seasons 3-5 existing, the "present" of the Trekverse is probably considered by a lot of fans to start after the end of Picard Season 3.

If it was set in the 23rd century, I suspect he'd be part of the cast, the fact that he's not suggests its set in the late 24th or early 25th centuries instead.

I'm sure people will enjoy it. But to me this just smacks of weird desperation cause Yeoh got an Oscar.

Space genocide organisation with space Hitler as the premise of the movie does not really interest me as a Star Trek show.

Shazad Latif could still be in it, as they seem to be listing newly cast people here.

90% chance it's DISCO/SNW era. They've been planning this since 2019, it was going to be a series up until a year ago, and likely want to use existing sets.

About 6 weeks of filming = about 30-35 shooting days. They film episodes in about 10 days (when they aren't, ahem, doing extensive reshoots).

Yup, super excited. A different look at the organization, as well as Star Trek in general. Does the values hold up when fast with past poor acts. Appropriately, I just watched the trailer for "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," which again feels like exploring an aspect of feeling the need to protect a nation while engaging in unsavory acts.

It's an interesting bit of worldbuilding.

I like this idea. Only slight downside for me is undercutting Prime humans being the ones originating it, showing their dark side. Or maybe she could be like the Devil on the shoulder to someone that pushes for it.

This would be my favourite era to do it, since it'd be closest to DS9 standards where they're more like shadow people, seemingly operating without ships or facilities.

I personally couldn’t stand the Emperor Georgiou character and seriously doubt that anyone would have made a movie with her at all if Michelle Yeoh wasn’t playing the part. And Section 31 is old and stale. But hey, if they manage to come up with an interesting plot and a good story & characters, more power to them.

Glad to see it happening.
