I wonder if they’re going to kill off Pelia. I’d be ok with that. Come to think of it, I can totally see them killing off Ortegas so Sulu gets her job.

They could just introduce Sulu as the new helmsman and it'd be several episodes before anyone noticed that Ortegas was gone. Though now that I think about it, Sulu would have to be a science officer as he didn't become helmsman until after Kirk took command.

I guess Sulu could replace Sam Kirk. He'll need to go and live on Deneva, eventually.

I noticed that Sam didn't have much to do in S2, except be screamed at by Spock and see his brother. His role was a bit diminished.

Yeah, there's a real possibility that most of our main Starfleet cast members, TNG crew excluded, were killed during that whole mess. Chief O'Brien? Killed by his students at Starfleet Academy. Janeway? Murdered by whatever young personnel were on Spacedock. The Paris Family? Killed by they their own daughter. Bashir? Dead. Dax? Dead. Kim? Killed the same day he was finally promoted to Lt.

Yeah, they’re not going to care about that. Just like they didn’t care that Uhura wasn’t assigned to the ship/part of the bridge crew in WNMHGB, which takes place after SNW.

I don’t know about “fan favorite”, but I think you guys are seriously underestimating how well-liked she is, even with the writers not giving her all that much to do. It’s hard to quantify this kind of stuff, but I doubt people wouldn’t notice or care if they wrote her out of the show.

I like Ortegas too, I was just joking about how little screen time she gets. It's hard to notice someone being gone when they were barely around to begin with.

I don’t know about ‘fan favorite’ either, or even an underestimation of how well liked she is, unless there’s some quantifiable data other than ‘I like her, so she’s a fan favorite.’

Well, I would say spending a lot of time here and getting a feel for how people talk about Ortegas at least gives us an idea, although obvious we all seem to land on different conclusions. Might be worth running a poll about favorite Strange New Worlds characters at some point to at least find out about how the Trek BBS denizens feel about her.

Common terminology in fandoms- "Fan favourite", "nobody wants this", "This isn't *name of show*", "*name of show* is dead". It comes from a subjective source but can't be backed up without a mass survey.

Well, I would say spending a lot of time here and getting a feel for how people talk about Ortegas at least gives us an idea, although obvious we all seem to land on different conclusions. I'd say that lots of people would like a 'favourite characters' poll, though I've no data to back that up.

I’d say fans like characters they want to see better developed, like Ortegas, Owo and Detmer, there were always complaints they didn’t get enough to do, while no one really ever said the same about ThoseTwoOtherDudes™ on Discovery.
