Season SIX OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

Just watching The Chase--one of Trek's greatest episodes--on SD the other night, made me crave for this set to come out sooner! But count me on the "wait for better quality" side.

RAMA
That reminds me that the Cardassian transporter FX were used for that episode. That's something of a taste of DS9 in addition to the station and runabout we'll get with the TNG season six set.

On the subject of glimpses of DS9 in HD, has everyone seen this yet ?

+1 for quality before speed.

This is being done for posterity, and I believe it should be done right. This is not about short term gains, but the long term viability of TNG.

To CB: Get it right guys, take the time you need. Then we can all enjoy the show we all collectively love with no regrets that it was rushed. :)

Oh, and thanks, CBS. :)

The Chase is one of my favorites of the entire series, as well. I had been kind of nonchalant about Season 6, but reminding me that it includes The Chase has increased my interest a bit. Thanks.

Trailer is apparently imminent, according to TrekCore:

"Time to reinforce the servers in preparation for the debut of the #TNGS6 Blu-ray trailer... #Birthright #GoNiners"

Seeing the missing registry number on the Galaxy-class ship makes me groan... the omission would be that much worse in HD!

IIRC, during the Dominion war, there were many Galaxy-class ships that were literally rushed into battle at the last minute, possibly not even structurally complete. So it may not be a stretch to see that some of them don't even have registry numbers or names.

Let me guess - they only upgraded the planets, and there are absolutely no new shots of the Enterprise, only recomposites of existing shots, including the through-the-neck-odd-star-angle shots. All of TNG BR is a wasted opportunity. Great to have upgraded color, and better sound, no doubt, but give the option for either original-recomposited effects and new effects with new angles and ships.

This project is over 2 years old, and CBS-D's approach to the remaster is news to you? There would be a run on CBS if they did that. Plus creating two different versions of the show is throwing money away.

You must love the Star Wars special editions.

Have you seen the blu-rays? I'd take the original, physical model shots and special effects in TNG-HD over the (comparatively) video-game quality CG in TOS-R any day.

Most of the original effects materials still exist so why waste time and money rendering out new CG? The artists at CBS-D make the model elements look better than anything they could produce in CG without a blockbuster budget.

Yeah, take these recomposites for example. What a 'wasted opportunity':

Clearly not up to modern standards.

What these shots need are new angles, more movement, more explosions. That's what today's audience craves.

I don't need more explosions, but new angles, yes. The exact same 'entering orbit' shot gets old as does the same warp-through-the-viewpoint-of-the-neck-with-stars-at-odd-angles shot we see multiple times an episode it seems. Seeing the ship sit there during 'evasive maneuvers' gets old. I don't need more explosions, but better ones that don't look all lifted from the TOS movies would be nice. The first and third shot you linked looked good, but the middle one I would've spruced up.

At the end of the say it feels like they could've done so much more with this. But I also thank God they didn't JJ-Abrams-ize it with a million lens flares and adding breweries inside the ship.
