Season 3 Might be a Very Underrated Season

Season 3 is definitely where the series started getting really good- with DS9 getting the Defiant to use (runabouts just always seemed ill-equipped for off-station missions), as well as finally starting to learn more about Odo and his relationship with the Dominion and the AQ powers starting to respond to the threat of the Dominion.

DS9 was a series that kept getting better with each passing season. Season 3 was no exception. I enjoy all of the episodes from this season but I've never liked "Past Tense". I thought 2 episodes devoted to this storyline was too much. I didn't really like the story even though it was a good social commentary. It just sort of bored me.

Really, it was the episode that got me into DS9 as it said time.

So what are everyone's favorite as from this season?

Mine is The Defiant. I've done a lot of scifi roleplaying in various rule systems and settings and many of my favorite characters have ended up as naval officers with engineering backgrounds. and several have been ship designers though they are usually captain or flag rank first. So finding out Sisko had helped design the Defiant was something I enjoyed. Plus it helped answer two of my questions at the time. Why was Sisko kept at the shipyards so long when the rebuilding and expansion of the fleet would create a need for captains and how did he know so much about the Defiant or even know about it at all before the Search?

Plus it had Tom Riker in it, though I wish he had returned for later episodes, and some nice interaction between Sisko and Dukat.

Civil Defense: Thin premise but great dialogue.
Heart of Stone: Weak A-story but good acting from Auberjonois along with an awesome B-story about Nog.
Visionary: Fun O'Brien romp.
Improbable Cause/The Die Is Cast: Essentially Odo-Garak road movie ... with action!
Explorers: excellent family episode with some attempt at broadening the sci-fi vision.
Family Business: The only good Moogie episode (thanks to Andrea Martin)--an alternative vision of feminism in a foreign society.

So many to choose from but probably Improbable Cause. So many quotable moments and Odo and Garak was a match made in heaven. I also liked:

Through the Looking Glass - My favorite of the Mirror Universe episodes

Second Skin - Probably the best episode featuring the Obsidian Order

Past Tense - Great commentary on a problem still ongoing

Facets - Probably Jadzia's best episode of the series. Could have been a two parter so we can learn more about the other hosts.

Heart of Stone: Weak A-story but good acting from Auberjonois along with an awesome B-story about Nog.

I agree the a-story was weak, but

Spoiler: hidden for those who haven't seen the entire series

the out-loud reveal of Odo's love for Kira to the founder and us as the audience, finally,

was worth it.

Second Skin - Probably the best episode featuring the Obsidian Order

One of the best episodes of the series to me. Certainly one of the best Kira episodes as well.

I really like The Search parts 1 and 2. Both parts are pretty enjoyable for me for different reasons. The first part is a pretty cool reconnaissance mission with their new ship and I enjoy the scenario of part 2, even with the reveal. I remember being blown away when the Defiant first fired it's guns as a teenager and that moment is still pretty great but as an adult I appreciate the setup for that, with the panic and confusion on the bridge and Dr Bashir leaping into the helm controls and coordinating with Sisko. The Romulan officer was great and I wish we'd got her back at some point. She could have even been the liasion in Season 7. One thing with the Defiant that I find interesting is that this new powerful hyped warship gets so completely pasted in it's first battle that I almost find parody, like if this was Galaxy Quest: Deep Space 9, the Defiant would have been completely destroyed with all hands and the following week we'd get one of those old Bajoran attack ships as the new hero ship.

Yeah at this point Federation shields were useless against Dominion weapons so evasion was their only hope but since they got caught off guard they had no real chance to evade. And the first hit knocking out their main power coupling didn't help.
