I was just thinking about the possible fallen Federation scenario for Season 3 and I suddenly realized how appropriate it would be for our times.
We live in an era where western civilization is threatened from all directions, outside and inside, in part because the people living in it have become complacent and took their stability and prosperity for granted, just like the denizens of the 24th century Federation all but took their utopia for granted. If the Discovery were to serve as a flame of hope, bringing back the Federation's ideals into a world that's all but forgot them, it would be the perfect message for a whole generation that grew up with Seth MacFarlane's and the Trey/Parker duo's trademarked "the world is screwed and you can't do anything about it so you might just as well retreat into your fantasy worlds" brand of cynism. What a better message to convey to a generation of disillusioned people than sometimes all it takes is a few good people willing to fight for what they believe in to make the world a better place and to make the better future they've imagined a reality?
Yes, it would be a different message than that of previous Star Trek installments. But in an era where people have became distrustful of each other, disillusioned in society and the effectiveness of cooperation, a message that we can actually work together to make the Federation of our ideals a reality, even if the whole world seems stacked against us, might just be what we need.
