How would you like the Federation in season 3?

Even if the Federation is gone in Season Three, I think we can all agree there will be an Enterprise of some sort in this time period. Which will it be? We know the Enterprise-J is around in the 25/26th century. Will it be the Enterprise-T? Enterprise-W?

I'm almost certain, the future of the Federation is something negative and dark, because thats where every show must head in these times we live in. We "need" images of the modern black/white clivages represented in our series. It needs to be dark and fearful so that our heroes become beacons of justice.

Yes, I am a fan of TNG and its overly optimistic outlook. And I know it is utopian and unrealistic, but Star Trek has always been a source of optimism to me and an inspiriation to further your boundaries and overcome differences for the greater good. Humanity was on trial once (Q) and it seemed to me, they showed their worth.

But I dont believe the current showrunners will be ablte to continue that enterprise nowadays. I dont think they really want to. It has to be dark and it has to be about the current american social media black/white, left/right oppositions. It really shows humanity hasnt evolved in any substantial way. We regressed to lesser intelligence. We dont understand each other anymore and we dont really talk to each other anymore. We have the Star Trek we deserve, not the Star Trek we need.

The Enterprise-J was the result of a timeline involving the Sphere Builders that was deleted in "Zero Hour", so if it ever exists in Prime, it'll look different.

It's Discovery so it'll look different anyway.

I was just thinking about the possible fallen Federation scenario for Season 3 and I suddenly realized how appropriate it would be for our times.

We live in an era where western civilization is threatened from all directions, outside and inside, in part because the people living in it have become complacent and took their stability and prosperity for granted, just like the denizens of the 24th century Federation all but took their utopia for granted. If the Discovery were to serve as a flame of hope, bringing back the Federation's ideals into a world that's all but forgot them, it would be the perfect message for a whole generation that grew up with Seth MacFarlane's and the Trey/Parker duo's trademarked "the world is screwed and you can't do anything about it so you might just as well retreat into your fantasy worlds" brand of cynism. What a better message to convey to a generation of disillusioned people than sometimes all it takes is a few good people willing to fight for what they believe in to make the world a better place and to make the better future they've imagined a reality?

Yes, it would be a different message than that of previous Star Trek installments. But in an era where people have became distrustful of each other, disillusioned in society and the effectiveness of cooperation, a message that we can actually work together to make the Federation of our ideals a reality, even if the whole world seems stacked against us, might just be what we need.

Remember when Q tried to get Riker to become a Q because the Q was afraid of humans surpassing them? I would be very cool with the idea that humans have evolved into high life forms. I also like the idea that some though haven't made the transition. Not sure what beyond that. Maybe they have become slaves to the bad guys or they live a "Mad Max" style future.

Also some other powerful group of aliens are now the major powers of the AQ. What if the Klingons are now famous for being artist or scientists. The Vulcans have regressed to their pre-Surak ways and are violent savages that travel through space, eating people. All sorts of possibilities. Maybe earth is now just evolved monkeys who took over when the humans evolved into space beings.

PLANET OF THE APES meets STAR TREK?

Hmmm...
Either that, or just use that in-joke from Stellaris where if you play as an alien, you can discover an Earth that has suffered a global thermonuclear war and is now inhabited by giant sentient mutant cockroaches.

Eeeeehrm... or a more serious answer, maybe an Earth whose surface has become uninhabitable, but the cetaceans in the oceans have survived and evolved to sentience.

It's Discovery so it'll look different anyway.

And regardless of the internal logic, there's no way any show will let themselves be constrained by a design done in two days for a background graphic in one episode of a series that went off the air fifteen years ago. They just won't.

I voted Federation GONE.

It’s the most interesting. Star Trek has told the story of things getting better and more unified as time goes farther. But the 31st century we saw took it to the insane extreme. Time travel becoming commonplace even. It seems the slightest lapse of stability could destroy the universe.

I hope it did, and Discovery can see the fallout, and it raises the existential question that the Federation thrives for hundreds of years, and then falls.

I picture them getting to the future, finding a destroyed Earth, wondering if Control still won. But it didn’t. The timeline played out the way we all knew it. The Federation became a galactic inclusive utopia. But in the process, insanely dangerous technology became commonplace. And that became uncontrollable.

And Michael of course wants to find a way to fix it, being who she is. And then is forced to accept she can’t fix it.
