Season 13 starts shooting in a few weeks

They just announced that Series 13 would be 8 episodes less than a week ago, so what I think is happening is that they're holding two of those 8 episodes back for 2022, and that they also used the Series 13 production block to do a 'Regeneration Special' that will air next Fall.

I mean, the press release literally says that is exactly what they are doing.

Not really.

It's not necessarily absolutely or immediately obvious that 2 of the episodes that were just announced as being part of Series 13 are now being held back and relabeled as "Specials".

Direct from the BBC itself:

With a six-part Event Serial announced for the autumn, and two Specials already planned for 2022, BBC One has now asked for an additional final feature length adventure for the Thirteenth Doctor, to form a trio of Specials for 2022, before the Doctor regenerates once more.

So where did they go then? We've been told repeatedly that Series 13 was eight episodes. They're showing six this year, two next year and then shooting one more as the final episode.

And given that the episode shown at the start of this year was shot back in 2019 they'll have made a grand total of nine episodes in three years.

Would you please quit acting like you know what you are talking about? It is devastatingly clear that you don't have a clue. All one has to do is look at the 'Whitaker is leaving' thread.

Series 13 was announced and reconfirmed repeatedly as eight episodes until today when it becomes six and we get two "Specials" for next year plus one final episode still to be shot.

If you want to know who doesn't have a clue I'd suggest finding a mirror.

I really don't see how there could be any other way of interpreting it.

The BBC doesn't officially count Specials as being part of a given Series even though the vast majority of them have been shot during a particular Series' production block, so the wording of their press release could lead one to believe that their announcement conflicts with the announcement from last Sunday that Series 13 would consist of 8 episodes and that the Specials they're announcing are not part of that previously-announced run of episodes.

Where did the other two episodes go then? Did they fall down the back of the couch?

After Red Dwarf 12 aired, we were told series 13 would be a full season. After a couple years, out of the blue, we're told it's now a 3-part special. Where did the full season go? Same cause and reason? Or not. Whatever that is, but we were told 8 episodes and a special. Now it's 6 episodes and 3 specials. It amounts to the same quantity but the main season arc is truncated for whatever reason - for DW, Chibnall must have changed something at script level, consolidated it-- wait, what happened to the other topic of recent claiming series 13 would be one long story across 8 installments? Is the goal to induce apathy? That seems far-fetched, especially when having to set up a lot of stories and get them filmed and edited and aired. Not an easy task!

That news is probably worthy of its own thread. Sad to see Jodie go, but relieved to hear Chibnall will be joining her out the door. Time for a complete refresh. Or dare I say it, maybe even a rest period for the show?

If it weren't for Jo Martin's performance I'd agree with the show being rested after Chibnall's story is done. It's probably too much to hope for a new producer coming in quick, with ideas, noting Jo, and doing something strong with an incarnation that Chibnall surely didn't create as a fluke or one-off throwaway?
