News Season 12 Classic Series Blu-Ray Announced

Is the blu Ray worth it? I was told that it didn’t add anything to it and that the picture quality was no better
I was skeptical that the image quality would be better, but it was actually notably better. I was impressed. The new special features are also quite nice. Yes, it is worth it.

Isn’t Sontaran Experiment the highest percentage of film of any story bar Spearhead? Was the original film (for all stories in the S12 set) rescanned in HD?

Season 18’s Black Orchid is the other candidate for highest percentage film, I believe. I wonder if that’s a metric being used to decide which season to do?

Sontaran Experiment was all shot on video. (And is actually one of the most improved by the jump to Blu-Ray.) The original film for S12 doesn't exist, so they were upcaled as well.

However, everything for S19 does exist and is being rescanned. (I'm pretty sure the film sequences in the Shada BR are proper HD as well because they look great.)

Honestly, I'm not the slightest bit interested in ordering this set. And here's why:

Castrovalva, although pretty. is boring. And when the plot finally gets going, its tediously complex. Thank goodness for Peter Davison and Tegan/Nyssa, who carry this overrated serial.
Four to Doomsday is OK, but I'm not in a hurry to rewatch it. Black Orchid is harmless, but largely inconsequential filler. Time-Flight is, basically, one of the worst serials of the show. Kinda is the only classic of the season, even if I like Earthshock as well, though that one really does feel like proto-Moffat - a big event show filled with big guests and a seemingly end-all return of a major foe. Its fanwank, but I like it.
So I'm not really invested in this season a whole lot to spend outrageous money for its BD transfer. I might've done so for its immediate previous season, though. And its underrated succesor.

I like this episode, in part due to the presence of Concorde but also the U.N.I.T. angle.
Seasons 9 (Three and Jo), 18 (Four in burgundy, his last season) and 26 (Seven and Ace, series finale) are reportedly the next ones lined up after that.

EDIT: At the rate they're currently going, assuming they save Hartnell/Troughton to the very end (and don't want to have to keep redoing those particular discs), they've got about four-five years (2023!) before they'll have to buckle down and either animate - or in some other way recreate - the remaining missing episodes, with or without whatever Phil Morris has been digging up.
My view was that season 8 which introduced Jo and the Master would be the next release (I guess I was wrong about that), why is the first 3rd Doctor set going to be season 9 instead?
Also I've only seen season 12 in one shop - Forbidden Planet in London, has anyone else seen them in a shop?

Not to go too far off topic but what is the image quality like on the Doctor Who: The Movie blu-ray like?

If Shada is any indication, I'd imagine its still better than DVD quality. But its not an extraordinary improvement, I'd argue.

Given how much copies of the Tom Baker set are going for now I might buy half-a-dozen copies of the Davison one to help fund my retirement.
Yeah, I feel kind of dumb for not buying season 12 on Blu-ray when it was £39.99, even though I hear all sorts of stories about problems with the discs. Silly really...

It'd cost a lot more to collect these seasons on DVD ;)
The season 12 BD set is £440 on Amazon UK from a 3rd-party seller! You could probably buy the DVDs of the stories for about £36 (as I did).

I expect the BD set will get reissued by the BBC without the limited edition packaging for about £36.

I imported the US release, largely because I prefered the packaging. It's in a regular case, and cost me less than $40US ;)

Essentially it feels like collecting the individual stories on DVD, new at least, would be a lot more than that

I'm working my way through the DVDs and audios for the missing TV stories from the beginning at the moment. By the time I get to season 12, Amazon UK might well have restocked. I'll make a decision then based on the price and whether the BBC have fixed the disc problems.
