Season 1 Symbiosis *Spoilers*

I just finished watching this and wow, what a great episode!

The ending was a real twist, I didn't even think of the coils and how not transporting them would eventually re-balance the whole situation.

I'm really liking TNG so far. Picard, Data, Riker, and Geordie are all great.

So much better than Voyager.

Back to Symbiosis....its the one with the two races fighting over transporting drugs (one race "needs" it, actually they are addicted to it") or something like that. Been a long time since i watched that one myself. Has Merritt Buttrick in it..

I remember this as a rather poor episode at best, but it's been years. I liked the TWOK touches, though - two minor actors from that movie, and IIRC credited writers from same.

Picard survived BOBW, Riker helped rescue Frasier and shagged Lilith.

Picard also had a relationship with Frasier until Frasier revealed he wasn't gay, and in the end Lilith hitched up with Data.

Now, let's not talk about the time Sam Malone dated Kathryn Janeway or my head may just explode.

The thing that sticks out in my mind is the horrible scene with Wesley and Tasha. "Don't do drugs, kid." "No, ma'am! Never!" The only thing missing from that scene was Lt. Nancy Reagan.

The other thing I remember from that episode is Tasha's last scene. This was the last episode Denise Crosby filmed, and if you look at the end of the episode when Picard and Beverly(?) leave the cargo bay, before the door closes all the way, you can see Denise Crosby waving wildly at the camera, saying good bye to the fans.

Hardly seems nice to fill the guy's thread with what to him would be spoilers for future episodes. Seems pretty clear from the initial post that this is his first time through TNG. There are a couple pretty hefty spoilers up there that, if this were MY first time watching the show, would make me pretty angry to have someone tell me.

To me, the best part of "Symbiosis" is Tasha waving to the camera as Picard & Crusher exit the cargo bay near the end. It's just cute. And it was rather convenient that the Prime Directive worked in Picard's favor this time. Usually it's an annoyance to be worked around or outright broken in order to "do the right thing."

Bah, there are spoilers in thread titles in all the forums. If you're not even through with S1 of TNG yet and really don't want spoilers, it's probably best to avoid forums at least for a while.

And you forgot that it was also there to justify letting innocent people die horribly. That's a classic.

Oh, God, the 'Drugs are bad, m'kay?' speech. Gaaaah...

It's my opinion that the episode could have been great for Tasha if she just hadn't been burdened with the 'Our Characters DON'T clause.' Her background SCREAMS that she would have done some recreational drugs just as an escape from the hell that was her home, and this could have been an opportunity to see what she could have been had she not been rescued by Starfleet, but because these characters were supposed to have 'evolved' beyond such behavior, they couldn't be shown or even said to have done things like that.

*sigh* Dammit, I got started. I rant about this at every opportunity, it seems, but it's not like I can do anything about it, given that this was over twenty years ago...

Who's to say Tasha wasn't an ex-addict? I'm not familiar with the breed, I admit, but that is exactly how ex-alcoholics sound when discussing their former vice... "I gotta tell this lie to you and to myself and smile while telling it or else it'll all come back."

The speech rang pretty true to me in that respect. Obviously, Tasha was speaking of herself, or at least somebody close to her, when saying "some people".

It's Wesley's naïvete that rings perhaps less true in the exchange. But let's remember that he is really quite young, much younger than Wil Wheaton, and has been raised in a protective environment. That sort of talk is common and consistent for the character.

I admit it could have been done better, though, direction-wise. There is no story logic in three of the characters departing but three (Data, Wes, Yar) remaining - it's a very clumsy setup for the three to have this chat. And the situation doesn't look as awkward as it should if an ex-addict, a slightly autistic savant kid and an all-knowing, little-understanding android sat down and talked about recreational drugs...

Symbiosis was great because it did what good TNG did: it made you think. I wonder how many viewers agreed with Beverly, and then when Picard had his say, suddenly agreed with him.

Threads, perhaps, but if I hadn't seen those episodes, I wouldn't read those threads. It's sad that a guy can't come discuss the new (to him) show without having people come into his thread and spew spoilers all over the place for no good reason.

What about the ones where a poster would mention an episode when the title wouldn't give the reader an idea? One might discuss Data's humanity then boom someone brings up an episode of a certain two parter revelant to the subject of the thread.

It would be like a new DS9 fan visiting the DS9 without wanting to know about anything beyond the first season but there are often threads about

Picard is willing to provide the Ornarans with the means to repair their ships until he learns of how they are being exploited by the Brekkians. The Prime Directive does not guide Picard's decision here: it is a decision that Picard comes to by himself. The effect for the Brekkians, whose economy is dedicated entirely to the sale of the narcotic, and are now unable to have it transported, would be profound.

It seems that Tasha is talking from personal experience during her conversation with Wesley. There was so much potential in the Tasha Yar character and it is a shame the actress didn't persevere.
