I can't speak for myself because it's been so long since I watched anything from that season that I just can't remember...

Most of Trek, let alone when trying to have a message, is pretty un-subtle.
Preachy tone aside, they were right regarding a lot of it. Shame they couldn't find a better balance. When TNG's "Conspiracy" aired or BoBW, you were afraid utopia would be lost in a way you really didn't during DS9's "Homefront".
And the series had a scope and verisimilitude in some of the earlier seasons it lost when it became an episode production mill. It had its drawbacks, but you felt they would have been less so with a bigger budget, whereas some of the blandness that came later didn't work with more money (see: INS).

I really like 'Datalore', 'Heart of Glory', 'Skin of Evil' and 'Conspiracy'. The good episodes were actually quite good, but the bad ones were awful. I hated 'Last Outpost', 'Neutral Zone' and a few others. Also, I loved Denise Crosby. There was a better balance of women to men on that show and considering her tragic upbringing, they missed the opportunity for some great shows addressing women's issues. Crusher is stable and grounded, she never had deep, unresolved trauma. She did lose her husband, but sadly, many people have to deal with loss early in life. Deanna Troi also did not have a tortured past. With Tasha Yar, there were so many chances for unusual stories. I think they should have worked harder to keep her on.
Deanna did have a little bit troubled past... she just didn't remember it.
Someone refresh my memory about the story in 'Dark Page'... I could be wrong about that.
That flies in the face of my experience and just about everyone else I know's expereience. The first two were "invader of the week" stories. You knew that they'd find a fix, somehow. In "Homefront", you saw the Federation doing this to itself. How do you "fix" fear?
Funny little bit about "Conspiracy". It was originally written more along the lines of "Homefront" (minus the immediate threat from an outside source). A cabal of Starfleet higher officers was planning a coup because they objected to the policies of the Federation.
