Scotty's accent

Scotty's accent good or not?

It was only one line. Too small a sample for decisions either way.

That being said, my inclination is nay, but reports at Trekmovie say he nailed it, so hopefully I'm wrong.

It's a wee-bit overblown, I thinks.

I mean, Doohan's accent was overblown and farcical but this guy? Yeesh.

Scotty had, what, one line in the preview? I couldn't tell how authentic the accent was. What did he say? "I like space...it's exciting"?

AFAIK, Simon Pegg's wife (who is Scottish) helped him with the accent. That counts for something.

Actually, Doohan's Aberdonian was really toned down -- he had to tone it down, else no one woulda understood him. ;-) A professor and dialect expert from the University of Aberdeen, however, did shrug and say, "He could pass for an Aberdonian." (Which means: Can we please stop harping on Doohan's accent? It wasn't that bad and complaining about it is very old.)

Pegg, according to interviews, went Glaswegian. Different accent, different dialect. No clue if he did any good with it or not, though, since it hasn't been heard for any length of time... we'll know better when the movie comes out.

There's not enough to judge it exactly. But if I had to bet, I'd trust an English actor to do a proper Scottish accent over a Canadian one (bless you, Scotty). Likely exposure and all that.

Irish-Canadian. You can really hear the Irish, too, in Jimmy's other roles. Can also hear a bit of it in Scott's accent -- that clipped sort of note, and some words. But still wasn't that bad.

i love simon pegg. whether he nailed the accent is not as important as how he will perform in the role (and i think he's perfect for the role btw)

Dunno, as said, too little to go on.

We had what, a few second snippet, that was alos edited. Not only that, it was obvious he was just beamed/shuttled up from an adrenalin fueled adventure ice-planet side, so its obvious that it was exagerted a little.

Still, c'mon, its a three second snippet.

I'll agree that the trailer is far too small a sample with which to make any real assessment. However, going by quotes here:

I had some leeway, and I made Scotty’s accent Northwestern Scottish — just above Glasgow, but pretty Glaswegian…
and here:

My wife is Scottish and I would hope that some constant proximity to a Scot would enable me to play the part. She was on-set a lot and I would come off-set and say, ‘Did that sound all right?’ She was the yardstick and she wanted me to play a west Scotland character rather than one from eastern Scotland because she is from Glasgow.
...he's put some time and study into it. I'll guess that he's gone for an accent shaded on a Glasgow-area one, because if he'd done a full-on authentic Glaswegian accent, even a lot of Scots would have a hard time understanding him.

Ye we nae gun have a gud tym now, laddie...

What?

Well being a Glaswegian i can definitely say that i think he nailed it spot on, not to heavy or thick but still very Scottish sounding.......i think he will do a fine job, and if you want to see just how many different scottish regional dialects there are watch Taysiders in space, even i have problems with some of those accents and phrases and i know what they are taking about.

I think somebody else nailed it when he said Pegg sounded like David Tennant in that...and as Tennant is Scottish...

Well....;)

Actually he says: "I like this ship, it's exciting!" or "I like this ship. It's exciting!" I have been thinking about a topic on that sentence implications. Does it imply he knows he is in an altered time line?

Anyway, whatever it means I like the delivery of it.

Ok it may sound authetic. But does it sound like SCOTTY?

Watch TOS' series and listen to Scotty's accent and then this guy.

Do they sound the same or similar?
