Scotty and Keenser (SPOILERS)

Keenser is the Robin to Scotty's Batman, the Ernie to his Bert, the R2-D2 to his C-3PO (though R2 is infinitely cooler), the Gracie to his George, the cream to his cookies, the crumpets to his tea, the yang to his yin. They're inseparable. They're the Odd Couple. That's all there is to it, really.
This is truth. More or less. The R2-D2 position has already been taken.

I could easily see a friend quitting in solidarity if his friend was forced to resign over taking a stand at work.
Probably because the only reason he is on an "elite" SF ship and not some space station in the backwater of the galaxy is because Scotty recommended his assignment.

Is there anything proving that Keenser isn't just a figment of Scotty's imagination? Maybe having spent so much time alone on Delta Vega he came up with an imaginary friend and he's just never left.

;)

Keensar's species are aware of the fourth wall so he resigned for comedy value, acutely aware of being observed by an audience.

I've seen people joking about this, and I've joked about it myself, but here's a thing. VOY: Scientific Method was a fourth wall episode. This has been done in Trek. It could have easily shown a character readily interacting with the (invisible) cameras and camera crew, until eventually it is discovered that there is a contingent of aliens with instruments and cameras on board, and everything was seen from their POV.

An Abramsverse series can easily take on the idea in an episode. It will be a decent tongue-in-cheek about the fictional nature of the show, a potential on-screen acknowledgement for everyone on set, and give the appearance of being serious in-universe (when in reality it is about interacting with the operators, writers and directors). ;)

... we could learn Keenser is actually a lot stronger than he looks as he viciously attacks Khan, like a rabid dog clawing and biting and actually wins in the end.
So Khan would still do well to avoid falling into the trap of thinking in only two dimensions?

Kirk was being a jerk.

The computer should have printed out "Kirk Is A Jerk" on the back of Kirk's uniform like in that one TAS episode.

I figured that both Scotty and Keenser had discussed it earlier and had decided that they'd resign if Scotty couldn't argue Kirk out of his current course of action. Keenser was so upset over what happened that he froze and Scotty had to snap him out of it.

I think PrimeSpock would have resigned in a minute if PrimeKirk resigned on a matter of principle/principal. Mmmmm what does that imply?

That they are good friends with similar ethical views?

For all we know, Keenser was number two in engineering, and if Scotty resigns his position and Keenser becomes Chief Engineer and follows Kirk's orders, then Keenser is throwing his friend Scotty under the bus.

It's just too bad that as he handed Kirk his pad, Keenser didn't mutter, "Up your shaft," before he turned and walked off.

During the ceremony at the end, you can just see Keenser in his dress uniform at Spock's elbow. I take this to mean he has been promoted to second officer.

I think it's too bad that he doesn't get a scene with some focus on him a bit. I mean, does anyone know exactly what he does?

Seems to be handy with tools (carting them about and throwing them around). We hear a tool drop (?) right before he runs up to Kirk and Spock Prime in ST09 at the outpost. Then Scotty hands him a tool before going onto the transporter platform which Keenser throws away. In STiD at the end right before Scotty tells Kirk that the warp core is purring like a kitten and ready for a long journey, Keenser is shown walking in the background toting a large tool of some sort (wrench ?).

I bet he's a whiz mechanic who can't communicate normally and is there on the proviso that he's with Scotty. Starfleet has to be flexible with so many alien races (though it comes across as set up specifically for humans).

Keenser was a gremlin passing time mucking up Scotty's wee bairns until Scotty finally confronted him and gave him a job fixing the engines instead, for which Keenser was forever grateful.

grem·lin (grmln)
n.

1. An imaginary gnomelike creature to whom mechanical problems, especially in aircraft, are attributed.
2. A maker of mischief.

[Perhaps blend of Irish gruaimín, bad-tempered little fellow (from Middle Irish gruaim, gloom, surliness) and goblin.]

Word History: Elves, goblins, and trolls seem to be timeless creations of the distant past, but gremlins were born in the 20th century. In fact, gremlin is first recorded only in the 1920s, as a Royal Air Force term for a low-ranking officer or enlisted man saddled with oppressive assignments. Said to have been invented by members of the Royal Naval Air Service in World War I, gremlin is used in works written in the 1940s for "an imaginary gnomelike creature who causes difficulties in aircraft." The word seems likely to have been influenced by goblin, but accounts of its origin are various and none are certain. One source calls in Fremlin beer bottles to explain the word; another, the Irish Gaelic word gruaimín, "ill-humored little fellow." Whatever the word's origin, it is certain that gremlins have taken on a life of their own.

Yeah, that's good to know, but I'd like to know what his actual position is on the ship. I guess we can just say he's an engineer. It's kind of generic, but that's something.

How about a maintenance technician or maintenance engineer? Wasn't he also wearing a work apron in ST09 at the outpost?

That's true. He was. Maintenance Engineer. I like it... :)

And he did some yelling in an alien language when Kirk and Old Spock first arrived at the Delta Vega outpost. Probably traslated to "shut the door, you're letting all the heat out!"
