Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R
Did you even read what you quoted? Because if you did you would see how wrong your analysis of what they said is.
It sounds like he was right to me. It seems like the producers keep comparing this movie to Star Wars more than any fans have, and their comparisons usually come up saying that they want Star Trek to be more like Star Wars. In this case, they say that Star Trek was
missing something that Star Wars had. It makes Star Trek seem like it's lacking or that even Star Wars is some epitome of greatness or apex of space fiction.
So you didn't read it either?
"Either"? So is there some implication here that both of us are wrong? Have you a better idea instead of just a short, dismissive, and trite response? Please elaborate if so.
Here, I will back up my words with a quote from the article:
Roberto Orci: Obviously we were comfortable for Christmas, because that was its niche. But we all feel it can sustain what it needs to sustain in the summer. One of the things we said early on is that Star Wars and Star Trek are always the ones being compared to each other by certain people. Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that even though they’re all in space and some characters are similar? It just felt like Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had.
Alex Kurtzman: so we figured the missing ingredient for this one was it needed a little rock and roll. And if we succeeded in doing that, I think it will meet the summer expectations.
For emphasis:
"Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that"
"Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had. So we figured the missing ingredient for this one was it needed a little rock and roll."
To me, this is clear in that they're saying Star Wars is more successful (to a large extent it is), that Star Trek lacks something to make it as successful, and that they're trying to capture that success by taking an element of Star Wars' formula. I'm not saying, "OH NOES, THEY'RE RUINING MY STAR TRACK!1," especially not in the context that
ancient satirically posted. What I am saying is that their constant reference to Star Wars, and how in some ways Trek needs to be more like it, just sounds dumb to me.
Plus, I think that this is a misdiagnosis of what the problem really is, and I think they don't really understand why Star Wars is as successful.
