(SciFiNow Magazine) - Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and Roll

They have a stormtrooper riding a hoverbike.

They have a very very deep pit for Kirk to almost fall into.

They are giving Sulu a sword and turning him into a 'badass'. I guess this version of Sulu doesn't grow plants in his room...he collects sharp objects...

They have a planet-killing "laser"[/Dr.Evil].

It seems almost as if Abrams is trying to make the movie something different than old Trek. Doesn't Abrams know that Trek is all about making everything as nerdy and needlessly technical as possible? I need my corridor walking scenes, dammit. If I were making this movie I would set it in the 27th century. Because then the technobabble would be slightly different. That's progress.

WITH SCIENCE!

I honestly can't recall the last time an actor said something interesting about a film prior to its release. Orci and Kurtzman may have exhausted everything they're willing and able to say at this point, but I don't think fresh PR blood is the answer, just give us the film.

Ashton Kutcher says he doesn't try to promote his movie if he thinks it's bad. I guess that's why no one's seen or heard from him in years.

I think its time Orci and Kurtzman stopped doing interviews and let the movie's actors take the lead in promoting this movie from here on out.

Honestly, I think they should keep doing what they are doing.

It's true, we have heard it all at this point by them but we hang around Trek boards dissecting every word, every day.

The majority of people who will hopefully see this movie and make it a success, do not.
So they do need to keep it up for 2 more months and the actors need to get on board too and promote it, so that word reaches as many ears and eyes as possible.

I honestly can't recall the last time a writer said anything interesting about anything trek. Braga was one hell of a boring interview.

Here -- allow me to add an "interesting" comment:

Rock N Roll Hootchiecooooooo!!!

Sorry...saw the title and it reminded me of that song.

Get the bad song outta my head!

Heh! Matches his episodes! :guffaw:

Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R

Did you even read what you quoted? Because if you did you would see how wrong your analysis of what they said is.

It sounds like he was right to me. It seems like the producers keep comparing this movie to Star Wars more than any fans have, and their comparisons usually come up saying that they want Star Trek to be more like Star Wars. In this case, they say that Star Trek was missing something that Star Wars had. It makes Star Trek seem like it's lacking or that even Star Wars is some epitome of greatness or apex of space fiction.

So you didn't read it either?

"Either"? So is there some implication here that both of us are wrong? Have you a better idea instead of just a short, dismissive, and trite response? Please elaborate if so.

Here, I will back up my words with a quote from the article:

Roberto Orci: Obviously we were comfortable for Christmas, because that was its niche. But we all feel it can sustain what it needs to sustain in the summer. One of the things we said early on is that Star Wars and Star Trek are always the ones being compared to each other by certain people. Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that even though they’re all in space and some characters are similar? It just felt like Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had.

Alex Kurtzman: so we figured the missing ingredient for this one was it needed a little rock and roll. And if we succeeded in doing that, I think it will meet the summer expectations.

For emphasis:

"Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that"
"Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had. So we figured the missing ingredient for this one was it needed a little rock and roll."

To me, this is clear in that they're saying Star Wars is more successful (to a large extent it is), that Star Trek lacks something to make it as successful, and that they're trying to capture that success by taking an element of Star Wars' formula. I'm not saying, "OH NOES, THEY'RE RUINING MY STAR TRACK!1," especially not in the context that ancient satirically posted. What I am saying is that their constant reference to Star Wars, and how in some ways Trek needs to be more like it, just sounds dumb to me.

Plus, I think that this is a misdiagnosis of what the problem really is, and I think they don't really understand why Star Wars is as successful.

Star Wars is successful, IMO, because it has a very basic, very simplistic plot and storyline, which is helped by having likable characters and good actors playing them. It also had considerably more behind it than Paramount ever gave to Star Trek.

I honestly can't recall the last time a fan said anything interesting about Trek...

Ugggh, Star Trek is not about being interesting. Star Trek was always about mankind working together in the most uninteresting and most unexciting ways. It was this mythos that Roddenberry put forth that is what at the forefront of this vision and the franchise doesn't need anything remotely interesting about it.

Or some other B.S.

Well, to be precise, that ain't quite true. The money spent on TMP outstripped anything that was spent on a single SW film, even the later ones if you adjust for inflation. And that is still true even if you can peel 7-8 mil off the top for charges to TMP that were really phase 2-related.

LOL! I love all of the “I honestly” comments.

Personally, one of the things that gets me really jazzed up about a new movie is seeing various interviews with the head actors in a movie. If I see them enthusiastic about their work, it usually makes me a little more interested in the movie.

I would love to see Pine, Quinto and all of the rest making the rounds on various shows starting soon.

I would also still like to see the film now though.
