Saw it for the second time today.
I love this movie so much.
Repeat viewing standouts:
-The transition from Kirk's birth to the title card to the corvette scene. I like it. Especially when the line of shuttles are flying away and the music starts. It's just of sense of "wow, this is what we are in for and it has just started."
-Kobayashi Maru scene. Loved Kirk's behavior. Also liked how Uhura delivers the first line in a sarastic way and her eyes. Also, Bones constantly rolling his eyes. "Should we return fire? No? Of course not. *rolls eyes*
-Nero. I agree, not a lot of attention was paid to this character's development(we had to give that time to the main Enterprise crew) but I thought Nero was pretty well done. I like his behavior. Example: when he says, "Hi Christopher I'm Nero" or when he is interrogating Pike and gives him one last chance before he puts in the brain slug, "Very well, as you wish sir."
-on the Nero talk I also like the sequence when the Narada is destroyed. The cut from the outside to the inside and the shot of Nero kind of closing his eyes as he accepts what has happened. The music plays a big part here. I like the final shot of the Narada being destroyed as the Enterprise looks on.
-Enterprise rising from Titan's atmosphere. This is a great sequence not just for the special effects but I just like the way Sulu and Chekhov work together. It is short but they are focused I just like it.
-Sulu in general was well played. Maybe one of the underated characters. McCoy Kirk and SPock have gotten a lot of attention for their portrayals but Sulu was very well done as well. Well done by the actor (not going to look his name up on imdb but you know the White Castle guy).
Negative observations(wouldn't be a trekkie if I didn't cover the negatives)
-Did Captain Robau even try to block Nero's attack? Come on man, put up a fight! Kirk would have grabbed the spear and smacked Nero in the face with his elbow. Sorry to all you Robau lovers.
-In general I really do not care for time travel stories at all. I think there is way too much time travel stuff in trek. I just want for in the future to just tell a story and not to have to resort to time travel. Too many paradoxes etc etc. I'm just tired of it. I would have been 100% fine if this movie involved no time travel at all and instead was a complete reboot. In a way the time travel element seems to be in place so we can link it with previous Trek. I don't think that was needed. This is me being really nitpicky though.
-promotion/ages etc. Yeah, the cadet to captain stuff is hard to swallow. Could they have done it in such a way that they fast forwarded from the academy to Kirk being a lieutenant or something? He could still be Spocks subordanent and overtake him in the end. I don't know. I think it could have been handled better. You can justify it by saying, "Well Pike knew Kirk's potential and obviously put in a high recomendation for him" and "well, Kirk did take command of the ship that single handedly saved Earth." also "well, Spock Prime might have said something like "Kirk is already supposed to be the Captain of the Enterprise by now and I know from my timeline that he is without a doubt capable of taking command so you need to give him the Enterprise." I can accept it but I just think it could have been done perhapse a bit better. (What if the stoyline was completly changed and Kirk was the first officer on the Farragut and came to the Enterprise's (under the command of Spock) rescue? Maybe sacraficed his ship and saved his crew in the process?
-I've been drinking and am tired of typing so I'm done.
p.s. Checkov didn't bother me. I think he has taken a little heat for the "I can do that scene" but I think he is a good character and a good portrayal. So there.
