Imagine Paramount are going the Warner Bros. Discovery route and burying Star Trek as a tax break. No new shows, no home releases. Never on streaming again anywhere. No merchandise. Never to be seen again.

All except for three of their shows. Which ones do you save?

DS9 and LDS were easy first saves. Up until yesterday, my third save would have been Enterprise, but I've just finished watching the first season of Strange New Worlds and it's blown me away so, I'm sorry ENT, SNW makes my cut.

The original Star Trek, without a doubt. Then Lower Decks and Enterprise. That way I have three different flavors of Trek.

TNG, DS9, SNW.

DS9 was an obvious choice for me, and TNG (specifically Data) got me really into science fiction to begin with, so that scores based on that.

I picked SNW as the third because as much as I love LDS, TOS, VGR, and ENT, it has done such a superb job in just 10 episodes.

TNG and DS9 are immediate, automatic, and easy saves.

The third one is trickier. While TOS has historical significance I don't particularly enjoy it, with the exception of a few episodes. TAS... barely counts. Voyager and Enterprise had excellent concepts but squandered them with mediocre writing (though if I had to choose I'd probably pick Enterprise over Voyager).

Discovery is easily my least favourite Trek series so it's automatically out of the running. Prodigy doesn't feel particularly Star Trek-y to me yet, so it's out too. Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds have been great so far but it's early days in their respective runs.

That brings me to Picard. I absolutely understand the problems some people have with it, and I will concede that aspects of the writing leave something to be desired. But I absolutely love the characters, and there have been moments in both seasons that moved me to tears. It's a curate's egg to be sure, but it's one I enjoy a great deal. As things stand right now I'd vote for it in third place, with the full understanding that by this time next year my vote could easily change to either Lower Decks or Strange New Worlds.

Then again, could I just pick The Orville as my third choice instead?

I think my initial reaction was a bit of a knee-jerk and I've decided to change my vote. Kind of spurred on by Jesterface's comment above, which I don't necessarily disagree with, but it made me think.

So I'd keep:

TOS

Because it's fun, it's unique in the franchise and even when it's bad it's still sort of good. There's one thing I can say about TOS that I can't say about any other Trek series (barring TAS) and that's that I could watch any episode of it at any time. If I caught an episode on reruns, I'd watch it. If a friend said 'let's watch 'x' I'd watch it.

It's a watchable show.

DS9

I haven't seen it in years, but it's a good show. Point for point it's probably the best of the Berman shows. At least it's the richest. It has the most diverse set of characters, a great setting, the writing hits more than it misses and it still stands as both Trek's best effort in serialised storytelling and in terms of developing it's characters meaningfully. I'd honestly regret keeping TNG or VOY when I got to around the Season 4 mark and realised how much drek I'd saved.

DSC

It's the bravest of the new shows and with that inevitably there have been a few falls, but it's (to me at least) a relentlessly interesting show, both in terms of what's put on screen and behind the scenes. It's a hot mess in both departments at times, but when it hits it really hits. I love the crew, the ship and the 32nd century setting.

So, vote changed. Done like this I have a 900 year cross section of Federation history.

DS9, TNG, TOS for me, although I feel really bad about leaving ENT to die. I haven't seen any of the new Treks yet, although I keep hearing good things about SNW.
