I though it was great, although I wish they'd showed it not told it.
Seeing a flashback to a capital ship* (the ibn Majid) and Rios In uniform and in form, would have been great.
(*although apparently we'll be getting a fleet in the upcoming eps.)
And it shows how far reaching the event was, yeah it's a bit coincidental that they just happened to be the ship that picked up Jana? But it somewhat gives them all a connection, Rios was ready to walk from it all, but now in his own way the mission and discovery and moving ahead is personal for him too.
Otherwise he would have been just along for the ride.

Jana (Soji, Daj) et all) are what lead to his own Captains death, lead Starfleet down a path of surrendering to fear, and his Captain putting a gun to his head and blowing his own brains out.
With Rios having to report it was his Captains fault.
    This broke him,.
That's why the scene of Rios and Picard, who instinctively takes the captains chair, which is what Rios is kind of been searching for, someone to replace what he'd lost, connecting on the Starfleet and mission they'd both lost, was so powerful. - Overcoming their own fears in pursuit of discovery.
It needed to be personal. :)

Soji asks him help her find her way my home, when it's inadvertently because of "her" his captain blew his brains out.
It ominously helped reveal the presence of more "Destroyers", if they'd found out through some random way, it would have had less impact.

That would require to show us a proper Starfleet ship. Too expensive.

Yeah, I can see why we didn't get any ibn Majid flashbacks - you'd need to cast a bunch of characters, create a bunch of new sets, plus Cabrera would have had to shave his beard off, which creates continuity issues for episodes not yet filmed since he can't just grow it back overnight.

I understand why some feel that Rios's past trauma being linked to the synth mystery smacks of small universe syndrome, but I can see why the show went there - same as the death of Thad Troi-Riker was also linked. It shows just how very far-reaching the ripple-effect of an event or incident can be. The Zhat Vash used Oh to infiltrate Starfleet, and because of that, because of her absolute ruthless dedication to her cause, countless lives have been lost or destroyed in a multitude of different ways, and the effects are still being felt to this day.

I thought Cabrera was excellent in this episode. Not just pulling off six distinct characters in one episode, but more specifically the scenes of Rios in his cabin, sitting on the floor drunk looking through his mementos of the past - the way his hands were shaking, every movement seemed to take great effort. Excellent work. Earlier, too, when he first clapped eyes on Soji - he was every bit as triggered as Picard was when he first set foot on the Borg cube, and that came across perfectly, even without the benefit of any illuminating flashbacks to help viewers understand.

Honestly, the only real issue I have with Rios's holograms is they all have very similar taste in clothing.

Can't one of them like floral prints or something? A little splash of color at least?

I wonder if the photo of young Rios was photoshopped from Santiago's earlier work from 10 years ago, like Merlin or something.

Why would they? They're all a reflection of the same person. We don't see Rios wearing floral prints.

Navigation and the Doctor are dressed just a little too similarly, especially with the same hairstyle.

Admittedly the doctor could use a white lab coat like Dr. Crusher used to wear

Presumably - it did look very photoshopped.
But the base personas of the holograms are pre-programmed, that was established in the latest episode, Rios merely added his own face as an overlay when he acquired the ship. So the shipyard programmer could easily have programmed them to wear very different outfits! Some of them are very similar.

There has been mixed reaction to the Irish and Scottish accents - I thought the Scottish one was pretty good, the Irish is very Hollywood Irish, but that works in this setting, for me. Because it is a hologram, programmed by someone in a shipyard somewhere, rather than a native Irishman, so a slightly exaggerated accent can be handwaved as part of the programming.
