I though it was great, although I wish they'd showed it not told it.
Seeing a flashback to a capital ship* (the ibn Majid) and Rios In uniform and in form, would have been great.
(*although apparently we'll be getting a fleet in the upcoming eps.)
And it shows how far reaching the event was, yeah it's a bit coincidental that they just happened to be the ship that picked up Jana? But it somewhat gives them all a connection, Rios was ready to walk from it all, but now in his own way the mission and discovery and moving ahead is personal for him too.
Otherwise he would have been just along for the ride.
Jana (Soji, Daj) et all) are what lead to his own Captains death, lead Starfleet down a path of surrendering to fear, and his Captain putting a gun to his head and blowing his own brains out.
With Rios having to report it was his Captains fault.
This broke him,.
That's why the scene of Rios and Picard, who instinctively takes the captains chair, which is what Rios is kind of been searching for, someone to replace what he'd lost, connecting on the Starfleet and mission they'd both lost, was so powerful. - Overcoming their own fears in pursuit of discovery.
It needed to be personal.
Soji asks him help her find her way my home, when it's inadvertently because of "her" his captain blew his brains out.
It ominously helped reveal the presence of more "Destroyers", if they'd found out through some random way, it would have had less impact.
