SAG-AFTRA vote to go on strike

Sure we do. Streaming is gonna cost more now.

The conversation was about whether or not studio executives will learn to treat workers better post-contract negotiations. That's what @M'rk son of Mogh meant by us not having a horse in this race, though I think, all else being equal, most people would prefer their entertainment to be made by workers who are treated fairly.

Unless you're in the union, you have no say in what's considered "standard".
You're quite right.

And that's fine. My disappointment lies in how business will continue on.
If it's sufficient for the actors and union, then it's sufficient, case closed. We have no horse in this particular race.
Sure we do. Otherwise we would not be discussing this for 24 pages and our lives would proceed on as normal without any regard for these unions or their work. In fact, why do we care at all? Why have this conversation at all?

Why not just let it play out and ignore it?

That’s nice in theory. But I bet most care more about costs. Check out chocolate. I can buy a bar direct from a farm for $18. Or I can buy one that most likely used child labor for about $2. I can afford to pay $18 for the better bar of chocolate. But I can tell you that I didn’t give out $18 chocolate bars on Halloween.

Update from Variety.com:

SAG-AFTRA negotiators spent Thursday afternoon in a holding pattern as the union waited for a response from management to its most recent counterproposal. The union confirmed late Thursday that talks would resume on Friday.

Agreements around AI remain elusive and frustrating to both sides of the table. Management believes the union is focused on too many “what if” scenarios involving fast-changing generative AI technology, while actors maintain that AI is the existential threat to their livelihoods that has fueled much of the strike...

...
As the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers inch closer to an agremeent, sources close to the situation said there was frustration from the AMPTP side that SAG-AFTRA raised a number of issues this week that are seen by management as late additions to the demands while the union side counters that these issues have been on the table all along, but were lower on the list of priorities, until now. This is a rerun of the scenario that played out in late September as the Writers Guild of America came to the end of its 148-day strike.

The union told its members on Wednesday night that it had delivered a “comprehensive” counterproposal on Saturday, and had yet to hear a response. The union has also said that the two sides remain “far apart” on key issues in the talks.

Update from Deadline.com:

EXCLUSIVE: A new proposal from the studios to try to end the 113-day-old SAG-AFTRA strike has just been delivered to the guild.

The actors guild and the AMPTP have set further negotiations for this weekend, we hear, with studio CEOs expected to participate directly. Anticipation that this could mean a new three-year contract is at hand within the next 48 hours should be “dialed down,” a well-positioned guild source said Friday, as SAG-AFTRA brass must fully review the document before even getting back to the bargaining table.

Meanwhile there are rumblings that the networks are preparing to begin filming their shows beginning in late November, eyeballing ten to thirteen episode seasons.

IMO it seems a bit ambitious, but doable. Though it's all contingent on if the strike is resolved within a week, which is certainly not a sure thing at the moment.

The studios have apparently told SAG this is their "last, best, and final offer."

What do the studios think they can do if SAG turns this offer down, recast every single actor in Hollywood?

Give me ten episodes of SNW and the second season of 1923 and I'll be happy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the use of AI to create likenesses of performers is the sticking point.

The studio is offering a one time payment ($32,000 for TV, $60,000 for motion picture) for living and deceased actors and to use their likeness in perpetuity without consent from the actors or their estates, while SAG wants a clause that says no performers likeness can be used without their permission and residual payments every time the actors likeness is used

The studios can fuck all the way off with this bullshit.

Jesus Christ I wouldn't even accept that deal as a random person offered it, and I have no public image or brand to protect.

Update from SAG-AFTRA:

Dear Member,

This morning our negotiators formally responded to the AMPTP’s “Last, Best & Final” offer.

Please know every member of our TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee is determined to secure the right deal and thereby bring this strike to an end responsibly.

There are several essential items on which we still do not have an agreement, including AI. We will keep you informed as events unfold.

In solidarity and gratitude,

Your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee
