SAG-AFTRA vote to go on strike

I definitely knew it wouldn't be resolved "within the next few weeks" that many were saying when the writers strike was resolved. I still hold out hope that it could be resolved by Christmas, though that is admittedly wishful thinking on my part.

The AI dispute is pretty much what I expected. All the AMPTP talk of actor consent just meant getting the actor to sign a waiver on day one so that their likeness could be used forever in anything remotely connected to that movie (ie. the entire MCU until the end of time).

And, as much as the writers got their foot in the door on streaming residuals, actors always wanted a complete replacement for residuals. Actors got roughly 2% of ad revenue in syndication, so they want 2% of streaming revenue.

I don't get why any actor would sign such a waiver. However desperate for money/a job you are you're surely signing away your career.

I could see non actors doing it, "we'll pay you $50 and you'll be in the movies!" Some people might consider it a laugh, trying to spot themselves in crowd scenes in films and TV shows for the next decade. Guessing you need to be registered with SAG-AFTRA even to be an extra though.

It's a terrifying idea however you say it though so I can see the union not budging on that at all.

I'm sure they would verbally tell the actors that it's just "standard legal language" and helps with special effects scenes or some other nonsense. That won't stop them from using your face, body, and voice to turn out some AI nonsense reboot in 10 or 20 years.

Mandy Moore slams SAG-AFTRA over strict Halloween costume rules: ‘Is this a joke?’
Mandy Moore has slammed the guild’s recent Halloween costume rules, as the actor’s union has created guidelines for striking performers who want to dress up as film or TV characters this year for the spooky holiday.

SAG-AFTRA detailed their rules for Oct. 31 in a blog post on their website.

“Choose costumes inspired by generalized characters and figures (ghost, zombie, spider, etc.),” the guild suggested, adding that popular costumes from projects such as “Wednesday,” “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” should not be shared on social media.

They recommended that members should “celebrate Halloween this year while also staying in solidarity” with the ongoing actors’ strike.

They noted that the reason to not post costumes online is to not give studios publicity.

Alongside an article of the costume ban posted by Variety, Moore wrote on her Instagram Stories: “Is this a joke? Come on SAG-AFTRA.”

“This is what’s important? We’re asking you to negotiate in good faith on our behalf,” she went on.

Moore continued: “So many folks across every aspect of this industry have been sacrificing mightily for months. Get back to the table and get a fair deal so everyone can get back to work. Please and thank you.”

I don't really have an opinion on this one way or another except that what is or isn't a 'generic" character might raise some interesting questions. For example, is a "generalized zombie" particularly different than one on, for example, "the Walking Dead"?

EVERYBODY already knows Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Jigsaw, etc. Or a zombie, as has been pointed out already. How is dressing up like any of those characters going to give studios any more publicity than they get already during this time simply by virtue of the existence of those characters?

It's freaking Halloween!

But more than that, that is their time off. They have no right to dictate what they can or cannot do in their off time during a holiday.

I suppose asking, for example, Margot Robbie not to dress up as "Barbie" during the strike is not unreasonable but, otherwise, good points.

Mandy Moore needs to get over herself. The guild is asking for the most minor of sacrifices in solidarity. Also, if Moore isn't aware that the AMPTP is the one that walked away from the table, she needs to pay more attention.

A part of me is somewhat curious, if the strike is still going at Christmas what kind of stupid rules their going to try to implement about how actors should be celebrating Christmas.

You can't dress up as anyone who looks like they should be in a Hallmark Movie.

Also thinking this will escalate the War on Christmas...

I don't actually think SAG's request is unreasonable. Why should striking actors give free publicity to the studios who are exploiting them by dressing as a studio's intellectual property?

But, it's not worth the bad P.R. it's produced. Better to let that one go.

It's a needless knee jerk reaction that's backfiring - they should concentrate on the negotiations and not waste time on crap like this.
