SAG-AFTRA vote to go on strike

In retrospect, I should clarify that there are provisions under negotiation that could touch upon individual A-list negotiations even if we're just discussing payment minimums. For instance, the union wants to create minimums based upon how well a tv show or movie performs on streaming (similar to residuals on regular tv and cable), and the information needed to calculate those pay-outs would inevitably be used by A-list stars who want to negotiate back-end deals above those minimums. However, the upside of these union negotiations isn't going to the A-list as such high-profile actors can each easily negotiate other forms of compensation beyond the back-end deals.

for those of you who are interested, the Shuttle Pod with Conner Trinner, talk about individual trek actors. they talk about trek of course, but its mainly a long winded interview of there entire lives, and how they came to be actors/actress's .. good stuff.

I say that because, there are a whole slew of actors that are 1, 2 and done, some who are on permenant "Guest Star" duty. You can have a good year and make bank, next year, you might shoot a pilot or a guest and not make much.
You may never have a break out roll, its all a crap shoot.
Now, likness rights? didn't Crispin Glover settle this when back to the future 2 decided to recast? He got paid.
You use my face, i'm getting paid.
probably get to the point of the AI just creating a random face.. no actor involved.

owell, Hope they work it out, and get some fair wages/pay that they can earn a decent living.

Now, does the actors strike mainly affect just the US, or are other countries involved. For example, would it affect the Korean Drama industry?.

Every country has their own laws and/or union contracts. However, there does appear to be a push for Canadian actors not to approve their own one-year union contract extension for fear that it will decrease both their leverage and the leverage of their sister union.

In the Crispin case, there was no contract giving the studio permission to use his likeness. We're discussing situtations in which studios try to use their market leverage to force actors (particularly the ones early in their careers) to sign away their rights away in perpetuity.

Highly recommend Dan Murrell's breaking down the demands of SAG-AFTRA (and also touching on the Writers' Guild) and the hypocrisy of the AMPTP:

He also had a good summary of the writers' guild strike a couple months ago:

Just the US. SAG-AFTRA is short for Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Arts. Other countries can continue to make shows and movies using their own actors (and at the moment, their own writers too) unimpeded.

There are some gray areas when it comes to American actors working in other countries. My understanding is any Canadian show that has American actors in its main cast will have to do without them until after the strike. However any American actor currently working in the UK actually has to continue to work due to the nature of the Equity contract, something any non-British actor working in Britain must sign which basically says they go on strike they could face legal action. Though that only applies to actors who already have an Equity contract, they won't be allowing any American actors to sign a new Equity contract until after the strike is finished.

Are there any actual actors on this forum?

Probably not. I've seen many on twitter and other social media. Look there would be my suggestion.

I know there is still some production happening in Australia. As are under the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), and they say that a small number of productions will be affected.

A good interview with Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA ( The Nanny from when i was a kid???:eek: Cool ). She sums up in her words and in general what the issues are, how the other side negotiated and what led to the decision to strike.

It's not about A Listers, or even D Listers - it's about the vast majority of actors who aren't even on lists and who struggle to make a living in a vastly changed media landscape (shows used to have 26 episodes, now it's good if they're getting 10 episodes on streaming) but still retaining old style contracts.

AI is another concern that needs to be dealt with now. The technology is not there yet but it will be and studios are foaming over the mouth and scrambling to get their hands on it to further cut costs at the expense of writers and actors ( and many other related fields). This is what it's about and i fully support it.

okay, 2 quick questions:
1) according to BBC, the actor strike will last till Dec. 31., a no. so happened to be123123. is there ANY new TV show to watch from now till Dec.? If not, I can cancel my subscription

for eg., what about that Aug. Star Wars series? what about Star Trek Discovery S5, as well regular TV shows such as NCIS

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66205719

2) for any actor / actress on a TV episode series or a film, don't they have an agreeable contract amt. for that particular film prior to filming or an agreeable amt. for that tv series? and each actor / actress is different? If so, where is this min. wage talk come from? doesn't every actor has a negotiable contract per TV series?

I couldn't find that part anywhere in the article you linked. Anyway, the idea of a strike is open-ended, it basically lasts until the SAG-AFTRA members vote to end it, presumably at the end of negotiations. This won't affect shows that have already been filmed (aside from the actors not being available to promote the release of those shows), but it would be more immediately felt than with the writers striking alone.

Collective bargaining. An individual actor negotiating with the producers is less powerful, because the producers can always cast somebody else, but when all actors come together to negotiate with the producers, this option is taken off the table and the negotiations are more on a level playing field. It's how unions have worked since they began.

okay, at the top left of the above link, it says " Hollywood strike could last until end of the year"

Pertaining (1), even for shows like NCIS or the new star wars series, they only film a few episodes at the most. What happens after the new episodes are air?

"Could" being the crucial part. They're probably estimating the treasury of SAG-AFTRA to be good enough to fund the strike till that time.

And, I don't know what is so hard about this, but there are no new episodes being shot right now. Anything shot before the strike could theoretically be released, but that's it.

Also, that's what one actor said. The opinion of what one person said could happen is very different from a news organization saying that it will happen.

For anything you see trailers now and that is released within 3 months the work is pretty much done, at worst there are special effects not completely finished but these are not affected by the strike.

Anything beyond is probably shut down, at least if filming in the US.

Discovery S5 is in post production, it won't be affected, neither will Ahsoka. Animated shows are also unaffected, different contract. Also americans in UK based productions are required to finish filming.
