"The Soul Key" and "Fearful Symmetry" also explain a point brought up in "Disavowed, but just like in the prime universe, there is a 5-year gap that leaves the MU storyline from those stories unfinished.

Just started Disavowed - my memory's crap and I can't recall if the 'botched' recovery of the MU ship mentioned in chapter one took place in an earlier novel. I haven't got my old copies to hand and I was picking up too many spoilers browsing through this thread looking for an answer.

My turn finally came around at the library to get Disavowed. Just finished it - fabulous book! I particularly loved the scene near the beginning where the Section 31 people are criticizing Bashir and Sarina's acting skills 
Just finished The Fall books and Acts of Contrition, so I am ready to move to Disavowed.
However, I notice that the book builds upon Mirror Universe novels which I never read (was never really interested in the MU) and maybe the S31 series of novels (which I also did not read).
Question: can I read Disavowed as a sequel to The Fall series without knowledge of the S31/MU novels? Maybe I can simply read the mem-beta summary of The Sorrows of Empire and Rise Like Lions?
Or will I get lost without reading them?
As they are David Mack books, I'm sure they're great...it's just that I was never really interested in the MU as a whole.

You can. But your enjoyment will increase if you read The Sorrows of Empire, Rise Like Lions, and Cold Equations: Silent Weapons first.
You won't get lost. And Mack's MU books are amazing. Seriously. They are worth your time to read them.
I know I wasn't lost even though I hadn't read any of the S31 books - all I knew about them was what has been previously talked about here on the forum. At the point of reading Disavowed, I had read Rise Like Lions (which I completely recommend btw) so I knew about the MU - but when I read Rise Like Lions I hadn't read any other MU books and David Mack did a brilliant job there too and I didn't ever feel lost.
So I'd say you'll be fine diving straight in to Disavowed. What you need to know will be in the book - you might be left feeling like you now want to read more MU/S31, but you won't be lost for understanding the book.

As Sci and trampledamage have said, you should be fine without having read Rise Like Lions or other books in the MU story. I've not read RLL yet, but all the information I needed about the MU was in Disavowed, although if you want all the details about the events leading to the MU's current situation, I assume you'd have to read the books.
Since you've read The Fall, you know the basic situations of the characters, which is really the important thing. There are references to events in Cold Equations - Silent Weapons, but the significance of those events to Disavowed is made clear.
At this point, I can't imagine that there are very many people who have read all of the books published in the last 13 or 14 years of the current interconnected continuity. I just read what looks interesting to me and usually enjoy it!

As a long-time Trekkie and occasional lurker, I must say you have a wonderful community of Star Trek fans and TrekLit enthusiasts over here. Not to mention that it's great to see the authors participate too.

An interesting book. Now just the nerve-wracking waiting for the next one.

I kind of liked the idea that there was a universe where the Tzenkethi developed the wormhole-drive, I am disappointed that the source of this ship was once again the Mirror universe, I just feel that the Mirror Universe is too connected to the Prime one.
2. Good Dominion
As I support the idea that the only difference between the Mirror and Prime universes are the humans, I just cannot assimilate a good Dominium. A such I am getting quite paranoid and fear that the Mirror Founders are playing a game, the are the same as Prime Founders and just show off their goodness to throw off any suspicions, while they insert their infiltrators into Memory Omega. And once they acquire all their technologies, they will then conquer the galaxy/universe/multiverse.
Sorry about this, I may be too set in my ways. Nonetheless, keep up the good work.
