Ryan Gosling to star in Logan's Run

From Deadline Hollywood:

Warner Bros is finalizing a deal with Ryan Gosling to reunite with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn on Logan's Run, the remake of the 1976 futuristic drama about a man who tries to outrun a mandatory death sentence that awaits all 30-year old's. After a distinguished run in mostly independent films, Gosling's making the jump to a studio tent pole. Production starts in the fall.

Studios all over town have been offering roles to Gosling, who is eager to reunite with the director he just worked with on Drive, in which Gosling plays a stunt driver who moonlights as a heist wheel man. Warner Bros has been trying to get Logan's Run off the ground for years. The project first became a priority when Bryan Singer wanted to direct it. Singer, who was drawn to the themes of the obsession with youth and mortality in as utopian society. Singer exited and the project languished until Carl Erik Rinsch signed on with a new take. While Warner Bros got a strong script from Alex Garland, Rinsch exited to direct the Keanu Reeves-starrer 47 Ronin for Universal Pictures. Silver Pictures' Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman, with Kerry Foster exec producing.

Done right, this has coolness written all over it. I just hope it doesn't get too bogged down like Ewan MacGreggor's The Island did. That had a lot of potential, but lost it somewhere in the middle.

So is Ryan Gosling the new Sam Worthington? :)

Hmm. Seems a bit old for the part. I was sure they'd go back to making the cut-off age twenty, as in in the original novel, and cast some young CW star as Logan . . . .

I have but one question. WTF are they remaking this? It's not like it'd be better!

Actually, LOGAN'S RUN has always struck me as an ideal candidate for a remake. The original is fondly remembered by fans of a certain age, but it's not exactly a timeless classic that can't be improved upon. I still enjoy watching it for nostalgia's sake (and Jenny Agutter), but it hasn't aged well and completely falls apart at the end.

SPOILERS.

The computer probes Logan's brain with a cheesy laser light show, then has a nervous breakdown that causes the entire city to blow up? What sort of ending is that?

The original novel had a completely different ending, btw.

Yeah, while I loved the original, I can see much room for improvement, like the city for instance and the outdoor scenes. The old man? Have Christopher Plummer play the role, much like Peter Ustinov did in the original.

Why not cast Michael York as the old man? :)

^ At the rate they're going in getting this remake filmed, by the time they actually do shoot the scenes, he will be...

Well, he's 30 now, so they better get cracking.

I suppose this means they're not returning to the source material, at least when it comes to the age. Wasn't it 21 in the novel and not 30?

Yup, and it wasn't just one city. The whole world was that way.

I remember reading the novel just after the seeing the movie, and I had no idea that one of the locations in the book, the Crazy Horse sculpture, was a real place. I'd love seeing that section on the big screen.

To appeal to the kids with ADHD who can't watch the old classics as they are. Oh and to make money.

Well, technically, each is an adaptation of a novel and apparently the new version will be more faithful to the source material. Much like the recent True Grit, for example.

I have fond memories of the original but let's face it, it's cheesier than an Edam board of brie, stilton and cheddar. Ryan Gosling could out-act the likable but earnest York in his sleep. And I'm prepared to suspect that the writer of 28 Days Later and The Beach (by which I mean the novel) will turn in a better script than the previous movie. The director of the new LR isn't the usual Brett Eisner/Ratner 'go-to-guy' for this sort of thing.

So count me in the none-ADHD and 'hasn't-been-a-kid-for-a-long-time' camp who actually thinks this is a good thing.

Or how about, for the sake of shaking things up, having Jenny Agutter in the role of the old man, rather than a man.. :)

I too have fond memories of the original, and a lot of it centers around some good ol' Jenny cheesecake, so I welcome an update. But it needs to have some real suspense, rather than a clunky old robot one could tip over given proper leverage.

Hmmm, you do have a good point there. Old woman with lots of cats. For some reason, that seems to fit the stereotype much better than the old man. And definitely yes about the robot. It's one of the things that stands out the most about the movie. Looks more like a toaster than a cylon

I agree with a number of the previous posters here; I love the first movie, but I can see LOTS of things that could be improved about it. That doesn't guarantee that the new version will be better, but in the right hands it sure could be.

The original shines in our memories because it was pretty much the only big scifi spectacular between the end of the PLANET OF THE APES series and the advent of STAR WARS. Plus, it was way sexier than any of parents realized.

But, nostalgia aside, there's certainly room for a new version.

(Ditto for FANTASTIC VOYAGE.)

I also found out about the Crazy Horse statue from the book, and I agree that done right this could be cool... I hope they hew closer to the book as well.
