I don't remember anything about the movie at all. Just a vague sense of disappointment.
I remember liking it, or at least admiring the fact that it wasn't a big conspiracy story and more akin to a monster of the week kinda story.
A few years ago I'd done an X-Files rewatch. To be honest I got partway through S9 and just gave up. I like Doggett but he ain't Mulder. I might restart my re-watch with this film then re-watch seasons 10 and 11 which I do recall enjoying.

You do recall correctly Callum Keith Rennie's husband was molested as a boy by the priest then got cancer and a full body transplant was attempted but didn't end well. I don't recall them every even pointing out that his head was being attached to a female body like no one calls attention to that fact they were more concerned with the fact an FBI agent had been abducted and murdered to facilitate it.
Certainly easy to see that the bigots would take away nothing but an evil gays and trans narrative from it but they do have smaller brains than normal people.
I Want to Believe is an alright movie, and had it been an episode that aired during say season 4 it would probably have been remembered fondly, even if not making the fan favorites list for that season. I think the disappointment many have expressed towards the movie stems more from the fact that it is an odd story choice for what is basically a reunion movie six years after the series ended. Hell, I remember thinking from the trailers it would just some run of the mill crime thriller with Mulder and Scully inserted into it, which I now recognize as an unfair assessment, though I wonder if it might be shared by others all the same.

Didn't even get that far. After a few seasons I got bored of the monster of the week stuff. It's very enjoyable to begin with but gets to samey. Luckily Wikipedia lists the "mythology" episodes so I got to around s7 before that starts to get stupid.
It's curious isn't it, back in the day I hated the mythology episodes and leaned into the monster of the week stuff. Last rewatch I found I liked the conspiracy stuff far more, and found some of the MotW episodes a tad tiresome.
Honestly, I loved the X-Files when it was on the air, but I've never been able to get into any kind of a rewatch -- monster of the week or mythology.
I keep meaning to do a rewatch (and first watch for many of the early episodes as well as some of the Doggett seasons) but I never get around to it. I do wonder how well it aged from my perspective.
I am very fond of the X-Files and I was only single digits during the 90s
Don't think it would happen in a show now where one week Scully meets various aliens and the next she is back to being about "science" and sceptical of Mulder. It's like two different continuities in one show.
The plots about the government using dodgy vaccines are a hard watch these days. Far too much validation for the stupid and dangerous anti vaccination people who can't distinguish fact from fiction.
