I looked into it a little bit, and my memory was indeed wrong and Mr. Awe was right. JNT did quit, there was no replacement, and Doctor Who was cancelled.
To be more specific, JNT said, "I am done after Season 26 is finished" and towards the end of production for Season 26, they got word that there would be no Season 27. The voice over ending to the last episode of Survival was added shortly before airing because the team knew that that would be it.

He did indeed leave the show hence why it was cancelled, but there are interviews of him stating the BBC just strangled the show budget wise to the point that by the end he just wanted done with it and to leave due to the continued pressure of making the show with a constant shrinking budget, that and the BBC were treating the show as a annoyancee they would be happy to see gone by the end.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were happy. IIRC, Mary Whitehouse had set her sights of DW as an example of "violence in children's television" and had made life No Fun for the BBC.
Well, it was a long time ago! My memory isn't perfect either!
I remember Hinchcliffe taking about the doctors attempted drowning in Deadly assassin, in which he thought his head was held under just that little bit too long, so he decided to freeze the frame thinking it would lesson the impact, when i fact he later stated it made it a lot worse.

Alternatively, JNT once joked every time Mary Whitehouse complained about Doctor Who, the show would see a boost in ratings.

Ironically she aimed at BBC tv shows when in fact if she had moved her aim a little bit more to the right, she would have nailed the biggest ongoing threat to children, the BBC itself and what was going on within the BBC and with many of its stars, and to the knowledge of many at the BBC, and just imagine if she had got hold of this in the mid 1970s, she could have brought the whole lot down in one fell swope saving a lot of children in the proccess..........and today with hindsight she was right on a lot of stuff, but it is just a pity she was unaware that there were real monsters at the BBC because she would have been the woman to bring them all to justice at the time.There's no such thing as bad pudicity

I’ve not paid any attention to the scumbag, but Saville was absolutely where he was because of his place and status at the BBC. Everything else follows from that.
I wouldn’t normally spellcheck but I always think it’s worth pointing out that the press used to remember how to spell his name via the memo “one L, as in ‘vile.’”
You have to feel somewhat for Whitehouse, as not only did she have a corporation filled with real life monsters right in front of her, but like everyone else she had the wool pulled over her eyes by TPTB at the BBC, hell she even gave Savile a award to celebrate wholesome family entertainment..........but if only she had known that she had the right idea, but she could not see through the BBC smoke screen to the mutituide of BBC monsters behind and in front of the camera.
Are you not missing the point here? She took umbrage at swearing, sex, basically any reflection of reality, but she happily hung out with the nation’s greatest groomer? Weird how she never protested or objected to racist or sexist jokes either…
They're definitely missing the point. Clearly it doesn't align with the anti BBC narrative being peddled here.
