Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

She's connected to the character from Boom, but she's not actually the same character.
This is my shocked face that Varada Sethu's Belinda Chandra has a connection with Mundy Flynn from "Boom." Even though I originally wished Sethu's companion was the same character as Mundy, I also wish they left the two unconnected and uncommented on, but I suppose that was never going to happen. I can only hope now that there will be a good reason for the connection.
Yeah, that surprised me too. I wonder if that was always the plan or if they decided to bring back Varada Sethu first, and then after she was cast came up with the connection between her two characters?

Thought the trailer looked really good. Has certainly raised my enthusiasm level for the new series.

Yeah, Rusty doesn't seem capable of leaving it alone when it comes to reusing actors - he had to link Gwen with the maid from The Unquiet Dead, Adeola/Martha...

Was more surprising that Moffatt actually addressed Capaldi having chosen his face based on The Fires of Pompeii (whilst never linking Karen Gillan's role in that ep to Amy).

That was beyond stupid.

Are you (a generalized "you") of European descent? Guess what? You too are descended from Caecilius. Everyone of European descent is descended from Charlemagne, who is eight centuries more recent than the explosion of Vesuvius. Amy Pond and Rose Tyler are descended from Caecilius. Jamie McCrimmon and Ian Chesterton and even Peri Brown are descnded from Caecilius, to say nothing of Charlemagne.

But, beyond that, linking Caecilius and Frobisher prioritized the audience's memory above what made sense within the series. The Doctor had been through two regenerations and several hundred years of life between meeting Caecilius and becoming the twelfth Doctor. The idea that one random person, countless adventures and centuries of life in the past made that much of a difference on the Doctor that it would actually shape his form? What arrant nonsense, Moffat!

Stupid! Stupid stupid stupid!

But really is it any different from Romana II modeling herself on Queen Astra?

I don't know whether it's that modern audiences tend to watch and re-watch and over analyse the minutiae, so writers feel they have to explain why things are similar in a way they never would before.

It might not make a ton of sense, but I can see where the writers would want to add something like that just to head off any questions they might get from the fans.

I think it speaks to how memorable the experience he shared with Donna, and the impact of her plight was within her that subconsciously had him "choose" Caecillius' face. I agree its way too specific, but its not the stupidest thing Moff did.

Should be noted that there is a version of the trailer on the official BBC Youtube channel that has a little extra added...an introduction by Ncuti and Verada in costume on the 'set' of the TARDIS.

The 'set' is just a photographic backdrop green screened around them.

That does not bode well in light of the unverified reports that the actual set has been dismantled.

That or they hide the actual environment for spoiler reasons. Not the first time. Remember the foggy, grey background in the first trailer not showing Ncuti on the roof of UNIT tower?

Except in this case, I gather this was a new bit filmed specifically for promotional purposes, making the fact they filmed in front of a greenscreen representing the console room instead of on the actual console room set somewhat noteworthy.

Granted, it could just mean Gatwa and Sethu weren't in Cardiff at the time and it was considered easier to do it this way rather than fly them to Cardiff just to film something so short. But then we couldn't speculate on how doomed the show could be if we went with that, so here we are.

And lest we forget some other fans think RTD is already looking out for his replacement, as per some comments made in Tennant's podcast.

I think you should always have a bit of a north eye on the next incumbent because you never know when the current occupant might leave. Heck in the 70s and 80s any number of guys could have taken the Bond gig if Roger Moore had decided to leave after For Your Eyes Only or Octopussy, in fact part of the problem with Eon is that they seemed incapable of even countenancing a point when Daniel Craig would hang up his licence to kill.

So much as I don't want Ncuti to go, I hope Russell is at least vaguely thinking about who comes next.
