Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

With Doctor Who it's become somewhat expected that the current Doctor will only stick around for three seasons. Indeed, even lifelong fans who considered becoming the Doctor to be their life's goal like Tennant and Capaldi were out the door the minute their contracts expired, so yeah, BBC and the showrunners know they need to address the need for getting a new Doctor sooner rather than later, regardless of how popular the incumbent may be or how much they like the job.

The above reference to Bond reminded me that by the end of this year, it will be twenty years exactly since Daniel Craig's casting was publicly announced. Definitely the longest that franchise has gone without a new Bond being cast.

With his newfound dress sense, maybe Craig is up for the role? XD

It'll be interesting to see this dynamic again, but FFS could RTD not TELL HER that this isn't "a way the Doctor has never been challenged before" because even if she doesn't know about Tegan, HE FUCKING DOES:

“Belinda challenges the Doctor in ways he hasn’t been before. She has absolutely no desire to be in the TARDIS and really wants to get back home. Which is hilarious! This Doctor has been used to using his charm or the mystery of his life to win people over, but none of that works on Belinda. And she challenges the way the Doctor has been used to doing things, as she’s equally headstrong. They push each other’s limits.”

The episode titles and writers have been announced for the upcoming season.

Yes, but then there would be nothing stupid for a person to say on a press junket. Something nice and ‘aren’t we progressive’ to throw out there in the face of potential traditionalism.
And never mind Tegan… it’s the motivation from Day One of Who with Ian and Barbara. All together now… LONDON 1965.

Yeah but what are they really gonna say? "In a way the Doctor has never been challenged before, except for this one companion from over forty years ago that most of our audience has never seen or was alive for"?

Ian and Barbara. Dodo. Steven I think. Ben and Polly. Jo Grant and Sarah Jane after a fashion (he’d presumably read the Haynes guide by this point) Himself and Romana after they got lost in e-space. Tegan. Mel (technically) and Ace (sort of, they meant to take the scenic route, and ended up going to Perivale more as an afterthought) Rose of course ends up accidentally jumping a year on her return journey, and Captain Jack was also hitching a lift.
(I’ve probably missed someone. I was going from memory.)

Basically the Doctor either accidentally picking people up, getting lost on the way back, and leaving the meter running is a hell of a returning theme. As is ‘unable to get back to right place and time’ (which may be why Doctor Sam Beckett borrowed the vibe) which originally applied to the Doctor and Susan, and certainly the Doctor himself post Time War.

As to challenge, well, he was also trying to give the exiled Vislor Turlough a lift, but that was complicated, as the chap was also technically trying badly to kill him. With Tegan. Who would, on some days, not only have helped, but done it with more success. Admittedly, by the time Turlough shows up, Tegan is in her chill Boob-tubes and leather skirts era. But wasn’t the whole selling point of Donna that she was also argumentative? And Nardole too.

Oh, and the fam was picked up in order to take home again too, if I recall. No arguments there really though, that was the socially awkward kitchens at parties era.

Basically, a lot of this is *really* basic stuff. Literally part of the shows very storied genesis. And am sure they could have found something to say. Although repeating themselves and remixing eighties stuff is a habit these days.

It’s all shades of ‘my Bond girl is different’ with a splash of ‘I’m Star Treks first African American lead! And a woman!’

"LUX"

Could that be a call back to the "Forest of the Dead"? Strackman Lux grandfather originally built the Library

It pretty much just means light though.

The worst title there is Juno’s one. And… I suspect it will be the worst episode. However, RTD has a finale there, so I wouldn’t bet on it.

Definitely some interesting titles there. It sounds like we'll be dealing with a big bad that has something to do with dreams or has reality altering powers.

"Lux" is Fifteen and three other Doctors in a variation of "The Four Yorkshiremen" sketch complaining about how rough they had it,

Used to stop Daleks invading in hole ‘int ground. Script editor used to beat us t’regeneration *before* season were finished, and ride bicycle to Television Centre uphill both ways, and pay BBC Controller for t’privilege. If we were lucky.
