Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Another vote for the Smith/Capaldii design. Whitaker's console room is horrible.

I am pretty sure at least one of the panels on it was a direct cast from the eighties one. The sound effect was back as well. Always found the Tardis hum very calming.

Count me as someone else more than ready to see the back of the cramped, uncomfortable mess they call the current console room. The characters and the console should be the focus, not giant, ungainly spires of crystal crowding the frame.

Random thought, inspired by the current discussion: would a thread for speculation on the next Who era be of interest? Bouncing around ideas for the console room, the 14th's personality and costume, etcetera. Probably pointless starting one so far out from their debut, but I figured it worth considering one in future, at least.

Can imagine it created a few headaches during filming as the director would have to frame shots around the stupid crystals etc.

My favorite console room in the modern series is the Smith/Capaldi version. I'm a bit biased because I got to tour that one at the studio in Cardiff when that was an option. But I think even without that it would be my favorite.

I was not a big fan of the coral design. I grew to tolerate it. Smith's first one was nice. I know many don't care for it, but I liked it. I actively dislike the current design.

The War Doctor and The Fugitive Doctor both had nice designs.

For the revival series (2005 onward) the Michael Pickwoad interior with the modifications (specifically, the extra stairwells) when Capaldi assumed the role is my favorite...except the "carousel" arrangement. I'd rather have motion within the center column, preferably a rising and falling action accented by rotational elements.

However, I do admire several aspects of the Arwell Wyn Jones interior with its theme of crystal and hexagonal fesnel components. Admittedly the "pipeworks" covering the console itself just seems out of place, almost "invasive"...like the Borg are trying to assimilate it. I suspect those parts are present for actors to more physically interact the set pieces, spinning dials, throwing switches and pulling levers with dramatic flair. However, if going with a crystal technology, why not go "all out"? Have the controls for each station also be crystals over which actors can wave their hands or dance their fingers upon the surfaces?

When I saw those first photos of the set, yes, I did think of Krypton from the 1978 Superman, but I also recalled the "Spaceship of the Imagination", a set built for the 1980 science series "Cosmos", developed and hosted by Carl Sagan. That interior had a "wing" or wide chevron shaped console with a seemingly dark surface. However, it was not opaque, but rather translucent. Underneath, light filtered through quartz-like crystal structures that softly flickered like candles. When Sagan touched different areas of the "smoked" surface, the crystals glowed more intense, responding to his actions. Something akin to that would have integrated better with Whittaker's console.

Now, if you wonder what unbridled imagination can produce, unrestricted by budget, practicality or material strength, get a load of this modeler/animator named ThetaSigma on YouTube. Steampunk, atom-punk, diesel-punk, chrome, brass, steel, stone, neon, floor standing consoles, ceiling mounted, free floating...the adjectives and adverbs just keep piling!

Obviously, there is little chance the BBC (or even Bad Wolf) could construct a fraction of these designs, but if you're in need of some tantalizing console pr0n, access Theta's channel every few months to get your "fix"!

I probably would classify the Eccleston/Tennant console room as my favorite, though the Smith/Capaldi one was also quite nice.

A new report on GB gives some context to those rumoured Tennant/Tate appearances

The plot is a meta thing where the newly regenerated Doctor finds a world where their adventures are chronicled like a TV show.

Tennant and Tate aren't playing themselves, but they are playing actors portraying the Tenth and Donna. This turns out to be a plot to ambush the real Doctor

Oh, lordy, I hope not. I've never enjoyed it when shows have meta episodes.

Granted Doctor Who is one of those that could make it work but I just don't want it.

That sounds truly awful.
It’s the kind of thing that might (and to an extent has) work as a very short story on a page, but not on screen.

It's a tease and kind of disrespectful to fans "We know what you want, and acknowledge it, but we're giving you this instead when we could have done the right thing." so in that regard, par for the course for Dr Who.

Sounds a little like the original DS9 for the 30th anniversary of Trek, namely that they would’ve returned to the planet from TOS A Piece of the Action, only to find that instead of being obsessed by 1930s gangsters, the inhabitants would’ve been obsessed by Captain Kirk & Co, & would’ve dressed in their uniforms etc. It would’ve been an acknowledgment of fandom.
