Rumors on plot elements...

How trustworthy are the rumors on:

-time-travelling being used in this film (is it possible Nimoy's Spock is used to frame a flashback, or is it dead certain he will travel back in time?)

-the use of the Guardian of Forever?

I thought I saw most of this at what is a pretty reputable source, but since I can't remember where it was, I'm going to say put little to no stock in those rumors.

How much does everyone even want to know?

If the shooting script leaked right now and was available, who here would read it? I doubt I would myself. I would certainly read a review of it though.

Raises hand.

I'm a spoiler whore. I'll admit it. Place the IV in the right arm, please. :D

I for one wouldn't. Found a script for Nemesis a little over a year before it was released, and I was pissed when it was almost entirely accurate. I'm not doing that to myself again!

None of that is by any means certain, since none of it came from anyone involved in the production.

It's known that there will be elements from both the post-TNG and the pre-TOS eras, and significant reason to believe that there will also be elements set during the 5-year-mission timeframe and the "boyhood of Kirk and/or Spock" timeframes (based upon some of the rumored casting and the ages of the actresses rumored to be playing their mothers). It is believed that Eric Bana is playing a villain (though I'm not certain of that) and that the charactger he's playing is named Nero (and is very likely, but as far as I know, not CERTAINLY, a Romulan).

There are many rumors flying beyond those... most of which are based upon anonymous statements quoted by what I'd consider to be less-than-reliable sources.

Nothing we've seen contradicts what we've heard as rumor. But nothing we've seen CONFIRMS it, either. The closest we've gotten to this was the angry posting by Harlan Ellison, but his posting is based largely upon reaction to internet rumor... and since (his style notwithstanding) it seems obvious that he's RIGHT, this is actually a fairly strong argument AGAINST the whole "time travel by Guardian" storyline being correct, in my judgement. I can't believe that PPC, or Abrams, or anyone else would be STUPID enough to overtly violate writer's guild rules like this would entail.

SO... take it with a grain of salt. It MAY be true (hell, Ellison could be in "phoney denial" and might even be INVOLVED in this at some level, as has been rumored about Shatner a couple of times). But the most likely answer is that there's no Guardian in this flick.

And all the "Romulans travel back in time" rumors I've heard have involved the Guardian. SO... I consider those dubious at best, too.

Which does't make them wrong... just makes 'em dubious. :vulcan:

Ah yes. Shinzon with his wavy ginger hair and Picard's "savage them!" line. Top stuff.

:D

Well, the main reason for my questions is that, as excited as I am about the new movie, I'm not thrilled about using time-travel again. Also, using the Guardian of Forever seems a plot device that the non-fan may find silly.

Possible rumor on Trek XI scene:

Kirk: "Guardian, can you change the speed at which yeasterday passes?"

Guardian: "I was made to offer the past in this manner, I cannot change."

Kirk: "Someone lost the remote, right?"

Guardian: *sigh* "Yes. And I'm stuck in fast-fwd. Which is why no one wants to watch me anymore."

Spock: "That is indeed a bummer."

There is virtually no element of "Star Trek" that is not at risk of being seen as "silly" by non-fans, and much of it frequently is.

Ok I can't see how a none fan would find the Guardian "silly" as a plot device, given its literal self-explanatory nature... well maybes its not as cool as a DeLorean leaving fire tracks behind its time jump ;) Just saying, you'd be surprise what the "dumb none genre fan" (yes this board leaves me with that impression that to some of us all none fans are blithering fools) can get behind provided they're entertained and enjoying themselves.

100% trustworthy. I can absolutely guarantee you that these are rumors.

I think they're pretty good rumors at this point. After all most rumors have a bit of truth in them.
