How trustworthy are the rumors on:
-time-travelling being used in this film (is it possible Nimoy's Spock is used to frame a flashback, or is it dead certain he will travel back in time?)
-the use of the Guardian of Forever?
None of that is by any means certain, since none of it came from anyone involved in the production.
It's known that there will be elements from both the post-TNG and the pre-TOS eras, and significant reason to believe that there will also be elements set during the 5-year-mission timeframe and the "boyhood of Kirk and/or Spock" timeframes (based upon some of the rumored casting and the ages of the actresses rumored to be playing their mothers). It is believed that Eric Bana is playing a villain (though I'm not certain of that) and that the charactger he's playing is named Nero (and is very likely, but as far as I know, not CERTAINLY, a Romulan).
There are many rumors flying beyond those... most of which are based upon anonymous statements quoted by what I'd consider to be less-than-reliable sources.
Nothing we've seen contradicts what we've heard as rumor. But nothing we've seen CONFIRMS it, either. The closest we've gotten to this was the angry posting by Harlan Ellison, but his posting is based largely upon reaction to internet rumor... and since (his style notwithstanding) it seems obvious that he's RIGHT, this is actually a fairly strong argument AGAINST the whole "time travel by Guardian" storyline being correct, in my judgement. I can't believe that PPC, or Abrams, or anyone else would be STUPID enough to overtly violate writer's guild rules like this would entail.
SO... take it with a grain of salt. It MAY be true (hell, Ellison could be in "phoney denial" and might even be INVOLVED in this at some level, as has been rumored about Shatner a couple of times). But the most likely answer is that there's no Guardian in this flick.
And all the "Romulans travel back in time" rumors I've heard have involved the Guardian. SO... I consider those dubious at best, too.
Which does't make them wrong... just makes 'em dubious.
