News RUMOR: Whittaker potentially leaving

RTD does seem to like working with actors with whom he's worked previously. Can Lydia West play someone who is, despite her appearance, hundreds of years old if not timeless? She did win an award for her performance in It's a Sin but I haven't seen seen her in anything apart from Gatiss and Moffat's version of Dracula. If confirmed, it seems like a choice that will upset some people, which I'm all for.

I think casting a black woman smacks of stunt casting. "Look how diverse we are!" Though I do think RTD not likely to fall in that trap, and will cast whoever he thinks is best.

What if he thinks a black woman is the best candidate? And is it stunt casting or reflecting the diversity of the modern world and giving opportunities to people from certain groups who were historically precluded from even being considered to play the alien with two hearts whose entire body regenerates every few years...

I kinda wish we could skip forward a few regenerations to a point where it almost doesn't matter who plays the Doctor, but as others have said everyone's going to have an opinion on this.

Hire a white man and you're just defaulting to what's gone before

Hire another woman and you prompt the question "Will the Doctor ever be a bloke again?"

Hire a person of colour and its stunt casting (frankly if Jo Martin is an example of stunt casting then bring it on!)

Lydia West has been awesome in everything I've seen her in, and RTD has used her twice now in Years and Years and It's a Sin (and Moffat's used her once and is using her again, I think Edited to add, yes he is she's in his new show)

I've been wanting Alexander Siddig since Tennant announced his departure. My other long-shot wants that don't seem like they'll happen include Eddie Izzard (who I've wanted since 2005!) and Amara Karan. Nicola Walker would be amazing, too.

I just noticed Alexander Siddig is now the same age as William Hartnell was when he was the first to take on the role.

As Garak said, not so boyish anymore (but suspect he's probably in much better health than Hartnell was)

One name I heard doing the rounds on social media is Olly Alexander

He was very good in It's a Sin but I think he'd be insufferable as the Doctor, and I don't know how a lead role would work with his music career.

Is Siddig based in Britain these days?

Not sure but he's relocated to work here before. Doubt he's on the list unfortunately.

He appeared in the first episode of Foundation in fine form which according to IMDB is his most recent on screen credit.

Oh, damn, I didn't know Siding was in Foundation (even if only for one episode). That gives me some motivation to actually watch it.

Are we all forgetting Jo Martin already?

What a brilliant idea for relaunching the series, binging in new viewers and bringing back lapsed ones that would be.

Big Finish will no doubt pump out as much Jo Martin as people want once they get the rights to 13-era material next year.
