Rumor me this! Batman!

Quite a few I heard over the years, either in magazines or at conventions.

-- Chekov was going to appear in TNG as a prisoner of the Romulans who had be captured on a spy mission.

-- TNG considered a script that would have had Khan and the Reliant crew reborn as a result of some prolonged/delayed byproduct of the Genesis torpedo.

-- Insurrection was the first of a planned trilogy detailing a Federation Civil War.

-- TNG was going to end with the 1701-D's saucer crashed, and the stardrive being rebuilt into her "All Good Things" config.

-- The original ending of Best of Both World had Picard leaving the ship (either for good or the better part of a season, depends on who was telling it) and Riker would become captain with Shelby as his XO

That "Year of Hell" was going to be a season long arc. Ah, the wasted potential that was Voyager.
I've heard a lot of these rumours, but this was the one I have always been disappointed about. This should have happened. But alas, I hear studio interference canned the idea. :(

what about the rumor that wesely was going to be revealed to be picard's son in nemesis...that might have made that movie 100% better than it turned out to be...

as for jack lord? I am an avid fan of hawaii five-0. jack lord was a good actor, and i think he could have done a very interesting take as kirk. but jack lord looked more like Jeffery hunter, and i heard at a convention that GR originally wanted lord to play pike..not kirk...look up jack lord/jeffery hunter. They could be brothers.

In DS9 instead of having the changelings destroy the Klingon-Federation alliance, I heard rumors that the original plan was to have the changelings manipulate the politics so that Vulcan seceded from the Federation, but they decided to have it be the Klingons instead when the decision was made to bring Worf onto the show. Since Vulcans are my favorite race, I would have loved to seen them play more of a role in DS9, but it worked fine with the Klingons too.

During the latter part of DS9's run there was a tantalizing rumor that the Feds would lose the Dominion War during the finale and the action would be taken up by VOY for its last two seasons, with Janeway and the gang re-entering the Alpha Quadrant at about the same time and teaming up with the DS9 survivors to save the day. Emotions were very mixed about this among Ninerdom, to say the least. But I thought it was an intriguing idea.

Ah yes I'd forgotten that one, too. There was quite some noise about Voyager making it home early and discovering an Alpha Quadrant ravaged by war, if I remember rightly. In many ways I think it would have made for an intriguing couple of years.
There was a lot of speculation (ie more than there was every year!) about Voyager coming home after season 5 IIRC. Even without the DS9 continuation story ready for them - the Star Trek magazines at the time certainly thought it was possible Voyager would make it back with a full season or more still to come. Where do you reckon they would have gone with that? the getting lost was a big evil conspiracy or something, and they have to follow that up? The whole crew just deciding to pootle off on adventures together after finally making it home would have been hilariously stretching believability.

In the course of many years, many 'rumored' episodes, or cameos, or plot turns, whatever kind of rumor you can think, have made being a TREK fan interesting, to say the least.

What was the most incredible rumor about anything TREK you have heard, but nothing ever came of it...but you wish something had???

Rob

That there was a possibility of Shatner playing Kirk on Trek XI.

Wasn't there a rumour that the real Riker would've been killed off and replaced with his transporter duplicate? Then the duplicate taking over Ops on the Enterprise, with Data becooming first officer?

^
I forgot about that one. I would have so preferred it. Riker ended up in that funky malaise sometime during Season four and never really got out of it. You could tell Frakes was getting bored. Basically it would have been the same thing they did for Acker on "Angel."

That Roddenberry was naming alien races using the "point at a random spot in the dictionary" technique. The Orions were quite nearly called the Onions.

[i just made this up].

Most rumors are just made up anyway. Often the studio will start a rumor to pique interest in a project... either current or future. :vulcan:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was particularly good at this - an entire story arc from the end of season 5 and all of season 6 appeared on the internet which was a complete load of rubbish. Turned out the 'leak' was Joss himself. And it wasn't the only time he did that either, according to his posting on The Bronze, the official Buffy posting board back in the day.

Back in November of 1992, I was out of town in training for work when I met a fellow TNG fan in a class. We started talking and he mentioned that he believed Wesley was Picard's son. Shocked, I asked him why he believed that. He said that on at least two ocassions, when Bev and Jean-Luc were alone and about to die, (The High Ground & Attached, IIRC) she began a conversation with, "Jean-Luc, there's something I have to tell you..." Then she was interupted and we never heard what was so important. This classmate surmized that she was going to tell him that Wes was his son and not Jack's. I was extremely intrigued. That would've been a great twist! Since then, the way the episodes were written, it was nearly impossible that Wes is Picard's son.

I also remember reading the rumor that Data's appearance would change dramatically in the next movie after FC. The basis for this was that they hadn't repaired his face or arms at the end of the film so that opened the door. To back it up, Spiner was vocal about how he couldn't play an ageless android much longer. I figured that it would be brought out that Data's emotion chip also contained an aging program much like the one that his "mother" had.

I once heard a rumor that they had made one worthwhile episode of STValium...sorry,STVoyager.

The rumor turned out to be false.

-When the early ENT literature came out, including the very first names of Our Heroes, there was widespread speculation that "Subcommander T'Pol" would be a Romulan. That rumor persisted in various forms for the next several years, and I always half-expected that she would (1) turn out to be a spy, or (2) her daddy would be Romulan.

-That the big scary upcoming enemy in "Q Who?" were going to be the bluegills from "Conspiracy." I believe it later turned out that this rumor was true, and that the bluegills were changed to the Borg only because of money problems.

Now there's an interesting idea - that's got me thinking now, would that fit with known continuity? would it have, at the point when the line was said?

You know what? That is the second time I've heard that suggested. The first was while hanging out with Wil Wheaton after a convention. He used the term "bastard brat" regarding his character. Perhaps he knew something we didn't? At the time, I thought he was just pissed about where the character was going in general... hmmm. :vulcan:
