RTD's TARDIS

Worf2DS9

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Whilst watching the Series 4 Confidentials last night, I noticed that in several of the segments RTD is doing his interviews in a room with a really nice model of the TARDIS in the background:

I gotta get me one of those! :D

On a somewhat related note, if there's one thing I don't like about the new series TARDIS, it's the windows. I think the original series windows, which had a marbled glass look (as in the model above), made more sense and looked more realistic.

I for one love the current show's TARDIS and consider it definitive. There's something that's simultaneously mundane and vaguely mystical about it....

Sixteen 12 Collectibles Ltd (located Here) had planned on creating a replica TARDIS, much like the one RTD has in that pic. Unfortunately...

We have been reviewing our projected product roll out and have had to come to the decision not to move into production on many proposed items.
The simply reason for this is very poor pre orders and overall lack of interest.
In the case of one proposed Prop Replica we have received no more than 15 pre orders.
Due to the current economic climate, many shops have significantly reduced their pre orders. In some cases they have canceled their orders altogether.
Obviously in these circumstances, if we wish to remain in business, we cannot commit financially to producing and edition of 800 pieces of a particular item with only a handful of pre sales.
As a result, we have no option but to cancel the following release:

  • Prop Replica Tardis
  • Prop Replica Tardis Console
  • The Dr Who Statue Collection is under review
This really is a great shame as a lot of time (and money) has gone into the research / development and promotion of these replicas but the reality is, if the economics of the project don’t add up then we have no other option.
Which sucks. But, the part they don't tell you is that the TARDIS replica was going to cost about $500.

Yeah.

Still, hopefully they will release the other products like the Tom Baker statue, the Original Sonic Screwdriver replica, Cyberman, and Sontaran. They have pics on that site. Check them out. :techman:

I've long thought of building one which would sit nicely in the backyard. There are two problems with that however. One is that we haven't got a house yet and two, the Mrs would never let me do it anyhow.

well problem 2 is easily fixed

I much prefer the slightly broader dimensions (LOL PUN) of the new series prop over the classic design.

I wonder if the console room will get a redesign for series 5?

I think if they were going to redesign the console room at all, it would have been between series four and the specials, when the set was out of use for eight months, rather than between the specials and series five, when the gap will be closer to eight weeks. Unless they're building an all-new set, which might be nice but sounds unlikely.

At some point in the not-too-distant future they're going to have to rebuild the set for HD, so it's also possible any TARDIS upgrade would be held off until then.

Ideally I'd love to see a new Console Room, new title sequence, and new theme music.

Nothing really against the current versions... I just happen to like seeing new stuff.

I think changing both lead actors, all three producers, the console room, the title sequence, and the theme music in one fell swoop might be a bit much. Series six might be a better point at which to change the cosmetic stuff, once the audience is reassured that it's still Doctor Who.

I'd love to see a redesign of the Console Room. This one looks like the inside of a Dalek.

And that made sense for Nine, who was carrying the survivor guilt over the Time War, but it really doesn't make as much sense with a Doctor who seems to have gotten through all of that.

I'm surprised there's even a question in people's minds that it'll still be Doctor Who.

We've had new Doctors before, and it's not like the new producer isn't familiar with the show...

I disagree with everything in the above quote

The show thrives on change though. We'll get all that eventually in dribs and drabs. Personally I can't wait.
if we must have change can we change the music & logo back to how they were S1 of NewWho, they change the TARDIS console to leopard skin, so everyone complains and its put back to normal, mark my words change for the sake of change is not a good thing.

It's not change for the sake of change, it's change for the sake of keeping things fresh and providing, paradoxically, visual consistency with new tenor of the show.

I disagree, how does changing the TARDIS interior every 5 minutes improve the show, does a new title sequence improve the show, if there is nothing wrong with the old one.

the current console room works fine, as did the logo & music in S1, the logo & music were ruined by change for "keeping things fresh" let us not ruin the console room for no good reason as well.

Oh come one, once in a decade hardly justifies such ridiculous hyperbole.

I'm only speculating, but perhaps, perhaps, the new cast and new producer will take the show in different direction to the last 4 years, changing the tone and style of the program. And then, perhaps, said producer might feel the intro sequence/console room/whatever needs to be tweaked or changed to better reflect New New Who, instead of continuing to use stuff that was designed around Russell T Davies's era.

I'm speculating, but for fuck sake, you know how TV works. It's not going to be the same show come 2010, in more ways than one.

It works fine for the current show. It might not fit the tone of the new show.

Classic Who tended to shuffle things about in a similar way when new Doctors or producers were coming and going. It's natural for people to leave their mark on it, and I would argue that we're richer for it.
