I agree, it's stupid. Especially since most royal marriages are prearranged anyway. Or do they really still do that? Did William really choose Kate? (For that matter, did Charles choose Diana?)

They used to be arranged. It's much more common for Royals to choose their spouses now.

And if they were choosing spouses for the Prince of England they would choose a Duchess or another Princess. Not a Lady or a commoner.

Lot of people seem to think that if Queen Elizabeth dies, Charles will abdicate in favor of William. What do you all think about this? Not if this *should* happen, but if it *will*.

Sometimes the spouse you choose can have major repercussions. For example, look at Edward VIII:

he caused a constitutional crisis by proposing marriage to the American socialite Wallis Simpson, who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing that the people would never accept a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands as queen. Additionally, such a marriage would have conflicted with Edward's status as head of the Church of England, which opposed the remarriage of divorced people if their ex-spouse was still alive. Edward knew that the government led by British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin would resign if the marriage went ahead, which could have dragged the King into a general election and ruined irreparably his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch. Rather than give up Mrs. Simpson, Edward chose to abdicate. He was succeeded by his younger brother Albert, who chose the regnal name George VI. With a reign of 325 days, Edward was one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British and Commonwealth history. He was never crowned.

I think it can also cause a problem if a King or Queen married someone that was not a member of the Church of England. However, I could be wrong about that... though I am pretty sure that the reigning monarch has to be a member since legally he/she is the head of the Church of England.

Anyways, back to Will and Kate. I am suprised that more people are not excited!

It will.

Charles hasn't been popular since he and Diana divorced, and even less after she died, and even lesser when he married Camilla.

Charles wasn't even that popular until he married Diana.

If he's smart he will abdicate for William. Not that I think William really cares, I just think he wants what's best for his country. But William is really popular, there's a lot of his mother in him.

If Charles ever become King there will be a great surge in support for the Republican Movement in Australia. Prince Charles is not well liked down here.

As far as the wedding in concerned - I couldn't care less and i won't be watching it.

I think he will. Charles isn't terribly well-liked around the Commonwealth, while Elizabeth is pretty well-beloved. King Charles wouldn't do the monarchy any favours, but I think King William would do a lot to carry on the positive impressions of Liz's 50+ year reign.

Mine too. Although I wouldn't be surprised. I find it hard to believe that any monarchies still exist in the age of freedom. And of course the monarchy has very little actual power, which makes it even more useless.

"Useless" is a matter of perspective, though. The monarchy is a symbol that, for better or worse, represents Great Britain, her colonies, and their shared history. As a Canadian, I've always appreciated the fact that we have that tie, that the Queen of Canada is also the Queen of the United Kingdom, Australia, Belize, and others. We all share the same head of state, and that's more than a little cool. And I know I'm not alone in this, as huge, respectful crowds show up to see her every time she makes a visit to Canada.

And let's not forget the historic role they've played. As recently as the Second World War, the royal family played a big role in a time of crisis, staying in Buckingham Palace during the Blitz. That massively boosted the moral of the British populace, and arguably played a big role in helping them get through the attacks. So while they may seem useless on the face of it, there is a certain value to the royal family, regardless of the direct impact they have on the day-to-day governance of the Commonwealth realms.

Well, I'll be Adelaide, South Australia which is 1/2 an hour behind Sydney, NSW (my usual time zone) celebrating a friend's 50th - I may be awake, I may be sound asleep - depends on how much Sth Aus wine I get into
