Rock and Roll HoF Nominees Announced

Agreed on both...

My ultimate dream, now that Rush is in, is to have Marillion be nominated. But alas, I don't think most people who aren't fans, even remember who they are despite still putting out great music and selling out tours.

My hopes for induction:

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - (obscure gospel/blues performer who was a pioneer of rock and roll. There is video of her performing in the '70's where she looks like your grandmother with a Gibson SG slung around her neck)

Kate Bush
LL Cool J
The Meters
Nina Simone

A three-pickup Les Paul Custom SG with vibrato!

I stopped caring about RRHOF inductions a long time ago because they are so arbitrary. But I was surprised to see the MC5 were not in already, and then, looking a little further, that the New York Dolls are not, either. Judas Priest, sure, but Blue Oyster Cult has never got a nomination?

There are so many great and influential artists who have been passed by, it's harder every year to see how the "honor" is relevant.

The Cars: The other day I was listening to The Cars and my wife asked "Is this a 'greatest hits'?" No, it's their debut album!

Damm, Radiohead already? But since they've been nominated, I'll be shocked if they don't get selected.

I'm really hoping for the Eurythmics.

Still no love for the Monkees, a band who sold more hits and albums than most who are being inducted

Thank god selling records is not the sole criteria for nomination or induction.
Yeah because otherwise the Hall would become a joke. Oh nevermind, it IS a joke and has been for years.

By the way, just what IS the criteria for selection? Other than being a favorite of Rolling Stone magazine?

I remember much online outrage when the hall of fame was first created, and lots of artists were being nominated who were most definitely not rock and roll!

Rock and Roll HoF is fine if you don't take it too seriously.

Yeah I think indie rock acts need more respect, but what are you gonna do?

Nina Simone was a fine singer, but none of her catalog comes close to "rock" other than the fact one of her songs was covered by David Bowie during his soul period.
To quote Ice Cube
Rock & roll is not an instrument; rock & roll is not even a style of music. Rock & roll is a spirit. … It's been going since the blues, jazz, bebop, soul, R&B, rock & roll, heavy metal, punk rock and, yes, hip-hop. And what connects us all is that spirit. …Rock & roll is not conforming to the people who came before you, but creating your own path in music and in life.
So it doesn't matter what type of music Nina Simone plays.

The Moody Blues have created some of the most beautiful rock there is, generally distinctive and often unconstrained by conventional boundaries. Their best stuff doesn't get any airplay. I'm rather partial to them. I'm rooting for them to get it.

Me too. Both Hayward and Lodge are so underappreciated.

And let's hope it stays that way despite pressure on the RRHOF's administrators and a recent capitulation by them to induct this 'rock' band into the RRHOF.

I remember the original inductions, but I don't remember much online anything in 1986.

You remember well, because apart from CompuServe, GEnie, Dow Jones News & Information Retrieval, and America Online, there was no online like we know it because there was no Internet (aside from Usenet and what was on college campuses.)
