People are being shot by police in all those locations? I just moved from Cambridge England to Southern Germany........I have not heard about these police shootings.

Try finding an apartment to live in while having an Arabic name. Anywhere in Europe. You’ll have a much harder time than a white guy.

Have you ever worried about not finding a place to live because of your name or the color of your skin (in addition to regular reasons that can affect everybody)? If no, that’s white privilege as.

There are so many more examples. The American police shootings are just the most obvious ones.

Alright, everybody, this has gone way too far. Everybody...and I mean EVERYBODY...needs to contribute to the actual topic from here on, and take the talk of white privilege, SJWs, and whatnot to Miscellaneous or TNZ.

Many of my friends are activists and all we want is everyone to be treated equally and that means no more white men on TV thankyou.

Straight is ok

Male is ok

All 3 combined is the WORST, a combination of 2 is iffy, only 1 is fine

There was never a policy against profanity. I know, I've been using profanity on this forum long before Tilly made it cool, and have never been penalized for it. Besides, if Trek BBS had a problem with profanity, the forum software likely includes a profanity filter option (most forum softwares do) which instantly renders a swear word into a series of asterisks. So if there were a problem with profanity, they could just turn the profanity filter on and prevent us from swearing.

It's all in the rules, and there's a link to them pinned in this thread...profanity is fine, slurs aren't.

White privilege is just not having to deal with issues that affect people of color. It’s not a value judgment. It doesn’t mean your life is easier or harder, you just don’t have to deal with certain things. Most of us live in relatively free countries, we can post here freely and don’t have to worry about being censored like someone living someone else. We aren’t terrible because of it.

The same goes for straight white men. They aren’t evil, oppressing everyone, or necessarily doing anything wrong. They just have less shit to worry about than people of color, women, LGBTQ people or anyone else. It’s not saying they have it easier or that they don’t have their own disadvantages because your economic status does affect how you’re treated, but most likely they aren’t going to have to deal with sexism, racism or bigotry throughout society. It’s like stats in D&D. White guys just have a lot of 20s.

Bingo. Well said. Privilege doesn't mean "without struggle" or "born with a silver spoon," it simply means not having certain cultural or personal difficulties as a result of how they were born. Too many take offense to the term without understanding what it truly means. And, most importantly is that people of privilege recognize it and use it as a platform for goodness. Use that advantage to help rather than deny its existence

The demographics haven’t changed, just how they were perceived. It was never just a bunch of nerdy white guys. Women, people of color and LGBTQ fans have always been there. Female fans basically built early Trek fandom through fanzines and early conventions. I don’t know why some fans have suddenly turned so hateful towards their fellow fans but it’s quite sad.
